Spanky Davis

Ronald “Spanky” Davis originates from Indiana and did his musical apprenticeship in Chicago, where Roy Eldridge first discovered him. When illness forced Roy to give up his regular job at Jimmy Ryan’s, Spanky was his immediate choice as a replacement, and it is easy to hear why. The young trumpeter has much of the master’s fire and crackle - allied with a more thoughtful, melodic side that’s all his own. He’s also backed such star performers as Frank Sinatra, toured widely with bands in varying styles, and has even developed a distinctive singing style. Above all, he loved Roy Eldridge, and their duets on this record (Eldridge in ‘HIS’ distinctive style) reflect the great affection between them.
