"Without music, life would be a blank to me." - Jane Austen

Swedish Chamber Orchestra

The Swedish Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1995 as the resident chamber orchestra for the Örebro municipality in Sweden and was joined by its current music director, Thomas Dausgaard, two years later. Since then, Dausgaard and the ensemble have worked closely together to create their own unique and dynamic sound, and the orchestra has rapidly become firmly established on the international scene. A tightly knit ensemble of 38 regular members, the Swedish Chamber Orch- estra made its USA and UK débuts in 2004 and has since then toured regularly throughout Europe, making its début in Japan and returning to the USA in 2008. Recent tour highlights include appearances at the London Proms and the Salzburg Festival in 2010 and the orchestra’s début at the Berlin Philharmonie in 2011.
Alongside its work with Thomas Dausgaard, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra regularly performs with the conductor/composer HK Gruber and the early music specialist Andrew Manze. The orchestra appears on a number of BIS recordings, including highly acclaimed releases with the music of HK Gruber [BIS-1341 and 1781], Sally Beamish [BIS-971, 1161 and 1241] and Brett Dean [BIS-1576]. In ‘Opening Doors’, its own series for the label, the orchestra and Thomas Dausgaard have released a warmly received three-disc cycle of Schumann symphonies as well as performances of music by Dvoƙák, Bruckner, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Wagner. The current disc is the last in the team’s recordings of the complete Schubert symphonies.
