Bernharður Wilkinson began his musical studies at an early age as a chorister at Westminster Abbey in London. He later studied the flute at the Royal Nor- thern College of Music, and was appointed to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in 1975. Active both as flautist and conductor with the Reykjavík Chamber Orchestra, Bernharður Wilkinson served as assistant conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra between 1999 and 2002 and still appears with that orches- tra on a regular basis. Outside of Iceland he has conducted a number of orch- estras, including the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Sofia Phil- harmonic Orchestra. He has premièred works by composers such as Atli Heimir Sveinsson, Sunleif Rasmussen and Haukur Tómasson, whose two flute con- certos he also conducts on a recording for BIS.
