Dominik Susteck

Dominik Susteck was born in Bochum, Germany in 1977. From 1998 to 2005, he studied sacred music, composition, music theory, and organ performance at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and the music universities in Cologne and Saarbrücken. He has taught at the Folkwang University, Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf, and Franz Liszt University in Weimar. He has been a guest lecturer at the music universities in Cologne and Dresden, as well as for the Archdiocese of Cologne, the Diocese of Essen, and the Diocese of Mainz. Of particular importance to him is work with young people on projects dedicated to compositions by György Ligeti, Kurt Schwitters, John Cage, and Terry Riley, among others.

Since 2007, he has been the successor to Peter Bares as composer and organist at St. Peter’s Art Station in Cologne. Susteck has played numerous premiere performances of works by composers including Erik Janson, Luís Antunes Pena, Peter Köszeghy, Niklas Seidl, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, Timo Ruttkamp, Martin Schüttler, and Joana Wozny. His concerts have been broadcast by various German radio networks including Deutschlandfunk, Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), and Südwestrundfunk (SWR). For WERGO, Susteck has recorded Stockhausen’s “TIERKREIS” and the organ works of Wolfgang Rihm, György Ligeti, Adriana Hölszky, and Gerhard Stäbler. He has also recorded works by Peter Bares and Jörg Herchet, as well as his own improvisations. He has written books on Peter Bares and Zsigmond Szathmáry as well as essays for periodicals including “Neue Zeitschrift für Musik”, “musica sacra”, “organ”, and “Musik und Kirche”.
