Georg Katzer

Georg Katzer was born in Habelschwerdt, Lower Silesia, in 1935. He studied composition with Rudolf Wagner-Régeny and Ruth Zechlin in Berlin and at the Academy of the Performing Arts in Prague. He then took master classes with Hanns Eisler at the Deutsche Akademie der Künste, the precursor of the Akademie der Künste der DDR (East German Academy of Arts). Since 1963, Georg Katzer has been a freelance composer living in or near Berlin. He is a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, the Freie Akademie der Künste zu Leipzig and the Institut Internationale de Musique Éléctro acoustique, Bourges/France. Aside from composing (chamber music, orchestral works, solo concerts, three operas, two ballets, puppet shows), Georg Katzer is also active in the fields of multimedia projects and improvisation. In the early 1980s, he founded the Studio for Electroacoustic Music at the Akademie der Künste der DDR. This CD is a special release celebrating Georg Katzer’s 80th birthday.
