Ensemble L’Art pour L’Art

L’Art pour L’Art is one of the most unusual and significant ensembles for contemporary music.

Founded in 1983 by Matthias Kaul (percussion), Astrid Schmeling (flute), and Michael Schröder (guitar), the group enlarges itself as necessary drawing on an established group of performers. L’Art pour L’Art is a factory for ideas that greatly enriches contemporary music through numerous projects. Frequently anticipating emerging cultural currents, the ensemble attempts to fulfill the original meaning of the term “l’art pour l’art”.

This engagement with the culture of our time leads to richly contrasting activities: numerous concerts around the world, countless premieres and first performances in collaboration with significant international composers, the discovery and support of young composers, music theater concerts, performances of rarely performed classical music, workshops for improvisation, direction of composition classes for children in Winsen/Luhe and Schreyahn (Germany), outdoor projects, as well as enthusiastically received CD recordings and radio productions, both in Germany and abroad.
