Geraldine MacGowan

One of music’s most precious gifts is that a song can – for a magical moment – stop the march of time and take the listener to a place where beauty never grows old. Geraldine MacGowan has the ability to stretch this magical moment into a two-hour concert. Her unique voice and her collection of “timeless Irish Songs & Tunes” is a mixture that allows the listener to leave normal time and space behind.
In the Seventies she was the voice of the popular folkgroup “Oísin”, having toured the world extensively. After a break she returned in the Nineties with her own band, having recorded 4 solo albums in the mean-time. Two of her albums have reached the Top Ten of the best folk albums of the year and in 2003 she was nominated as “best female artist” at the Irish Music Awards. She played with Davy Spillane, Paddy Keenan, Paul Brady and many other artists.  A companion since the Oísin-days is Brian O’Connor, a champion on the flutes with his special technique and his breathtaking dynamics.
Having lived in Germany for ten years she returned to the Emerald Isle at the beginning of the New Millenium. This was a kind of renaissance for her music and resulted in her current album “Somewhere along the road”. The Irish Music Magazine wrote: “Now Geraldine has come home and ‘somewhere along the road’ is a triumphant return”.
When the jigs & reels take over the stage and Geraldine rests her vocal chords to let her excellent musicians shine, she takes up the bodhrán and contributes a kicking rhythm. Geraldine has never made much of trends or fashions, and has never been really interested in what is „in“ or „out“. She has been herself, throughout a musical career spanning more than three decades.
To the media, her music is “matured folk music” (Taunuszeitung). Hildesheimer Zeitung topped: “Irish high voltage” and Rheinische Post wrote: “Ireland’s ‘folk-legend’ is seriously lively”   Her solo CDs, „Reconciliation“, „‘Til the Morning Comes“ and ”Timeless”  received rave reviews from all over the world and attracted such prominent „backing“ musicians as Capercaillie‘s Mike McGoldrick and Kai Wingenfelder (singer with „Fury in the Slaughterhouse“, one of Germany‘s most popular rock-bands). „fRoots“ voted „Til the Morning Comes“ one of the ten best Irish productions of 1997 and, in Germany, she graced the cover of the world music publication „Folker“. She has also been (and will be) featured in the Irish folk bible „Irish Music Magazine“. The venues where she and her band appear range from prestigious concert halls such as the „Alte Oper“ in Frankfurt to cultural centres, folk clubs and theatres.
