There’s nothing like it. When a heartfelt phrase bridges the gap between the player and listener, when a tight group of instrumentalists dashes through an intricate chart with precision and elan – hearing a good jazz band can be a True peak experience. Jim Cifelli’s New York Nonet is such a band. While every member is a superb soloist, the richly detailed charts make it clear that this is more than just a collection of hot players – these musicians breathe as one. With nine players, the group has the tightness and rapid response of a small combo – and the sonorous resources of a big band. The best jazz eveokes a wide range of emotions, and Jim Cifelli’s New York Nonet is an example of just how good it can get.
