In 1991 Benjamin graduated with honors at Hilversum Conservatory as a performing artist. That same year he won the prestigious Wessel Ilcken Prize and participated as one of the only three European musicians in the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. In 1992 he was awarded a six-month grant by the Dutch government to study in New York with Dick Oatts (lead alto sax with the former Mel Lewis / Thad Jones Big Band) at Manhattan School of Music.

Benjamin is one of the few jazz saxophonists of his generation to venture seriously into theater and pop music, working with the ground-breaking Werkteater company and touring with comedian Paul Haenen (a.k.a. Margreet Dolman). Benjamin has played and recorded with Ulco Bed’s Moonbootz as well as with Candy Dulfer, Lois Lane and The Pilgrims.

At present, Benjamin plays in a sextet with Michiel Borstlap (winner of the 1996 Thelonious Monk composition prize), the Piet Kuiters Quartet and the Fra Fra Big Band. In addition to working with contemporaries, Benjamin’s definitive style has made him a popular soloist among the more established institutions of European jazz, including Georgie Fame, Rein de Graaff, Cees Slinger, Misha Mengelberg and the Metropool Orkest etc.
