About the album

Based on my in-depth research and the many clues – which can be elucidated here only in part – I concur with Harro Schmidt, the editor of the sheet music publication by Schott Music Mainz (1984). In his preface he writes: “Contrary to all the traditional timidity in attribution and doubts about authenticity passed on to us by musicologists – Riemann, Hess and Kinsky, for example – I regard it as proven that we have here an arrangement that was created and published under the composer’s own eyes in BEETHOVEN’S IMMEDIATE SPHERE OF INFLUENCE.”

Beethoven travelled to Prague, where he met Countess Josephine von Clary-Aldringen (1777 – 1828, married since 1797 as Countess Clamm-Gallas). She played the mandolin. Beethoven wrote several works for mandolin and piano for her; of these, four have been preserved arranged by the composer for violoncello and piano. Beethoven wrote for a mandolin tuned G-D-A-E, thus the transcription for violoncello presented no problem.

Already in 1990, Steven Isserlis edited the Variations WoO 44b for Violoncello for Faber Music Ltd., and Peters Verlag published a version of the Sonatina WoO 43a by the cellist J. Stutschewsky as early as 1931, although in D Minor, not in the original key of C Minor. I have chosen the arrangement in the original keys and as close to the original as possible.

Like Steven Isserlis, I believe that these works show “Beethoven at his most elegant”; they are miniature, refulgent jewels, which José Gallardo and I play with the greatest pleasure and success. (source: linernotes written by Julius Berger)
De onbekende Beethoven
Dit album bevat meerdere werken van Ludwig van Beethoven die een lange tijd vergeten of verloren zijn geweest. De stukkken worden uitgevoerd op cello en piano door Julius Berger en José Gallardo.

Het eerste werk, Sonate op. 64, was specifiek geschreven voor piano en cello, maar is jarenlang geïdentificeerd als een versie geschreven door een andere componist. Na lang onderzoek concludeert Julius Berger dat het stuk wel degelijk door Beethoven zelf gecomponeerd is. De sonate begint met een intens eerste deel dat bijna symfonisch aanvoelt. Dit wordt gevolgd door twee delen waarin ritmische herhaling een grote rol speelt. De kern van het stuk zit in het langzame deel met veel zware, intense tonen. Het stuk eindigt met een een vrolijk menuet en een indrukwekkende finale.

De overige werken waren oorspronkelijk geschreven voor mandoline en piano, maar gezien de mandoline vergelijkbaar gestemd wordt met de cello was het geen probleem om dit werk te arrangeren. Beethoven schreef de muziek voor gravin Josephine von Clary-Aldringen, die zelf de mandoline vaak bespeelde. Het eerste stuk , een vrolijke sonatina (een miniatuursonate) wordt gevolgd door het tragische Adagio ma non troppo. Een andere vrolijke, maar zeer virtuose sonatina volgt en het album sluit met variaties op een thema, die de veelzijdigheid van Beethovens virtuositeit tentoonstellen.

Julius Berger en José Gallardo zijn internationaal geprezen musici. Berger heeft een groot deel van zijn carrière gewijd aan internationale uitvoeringen en opnames van de herontdekking van het oeuvre van Boccherini en Leonardo Leo, naast de vroegste muziek die geschreven is voor cello van Antonii en Gabrielli.
1807 erschien die Bearbeitung von Beethovens Streichtrios op. 3 aus dem Jahr 1794 in der Fassung für Klavier und Violoncello als op. 64 für Klavier und Violoncello. Beethoven Werke für Mandoline und Klavier übertrug Julius Berger für diese Instrumente. Beide äußerst reizvolle Bearbeitungen sind auf dieser CD vereint. Berger spielt eines der ältesten Celli der Welt, das Violoncello Andrea Amati aus dem Jahr 1566 - ?Känig Charles IX.? und ist Professor für Violoncello und Kammermusik am Leopold-Mozart-Zentrum der Universität Augsburg. Der argentinische Pianist Jose Gallardo lehrt ebenso dort seit Herbst 2008.

Later he continued his studies with Prof. Poldi Mildner in the Faculty of Music at the University of Mainz, completing his diploma in 1997. Even then he realised his first love would be for chamber music. His musical inspiration came from such artists as Menahem Pressler, Alfonso Montecino, Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, Sergiu Celibidache, Rosalyn Tureck and Bernard Greenhouse. José Gallardo has won many national and international awards. He is very busy playing recitals and concerts, including chamber music appearances with other musicians in Europe, Asia, Israel, Oceania and South America, among them Alberto Lysy, Gidon Kremer, Chen Zimbalista, Julius Berger, Danjulo Ishizaka, Nicolas Altstaedt and many more. Concert halls he has played in include the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, the Zurich Tonhalle, the Hamburg Musikhalle, the Kurhaus Wiesbaden, Teatro della Pergola Florence and the Wigmore Hall London. From 1998 to 2008, he taught in the faculty of music at the University of Mainz; since autumn 2008, he has been teaching at the Leopold Mozart Zentrum in the University of Augsburg.

Later, he studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria under Antonio Janigro (who´s assistant he became from 1979 to 1982) and at the University of Cincinnati, USA under Zara Nelsova and on the occasion of a master-course under Mstislav Rostropovic. With 28 years Julius Berger was appointed to the Musikhochschule Wuerzburg and was one of the youngest professors in Germany. Starting in Wuerzburg, later in Saarbruecken and Mainz, and since 2000 in Augsburg, he took efforts to promote the top new talents in his subject. Julius Berger devotes a big part of international concert- and recording-works to the rediscovery of Luigi Boccherini´s complete works, the performance and CD-edition of the works für Violoncello and pianoforte by Paul Hindemith, the works of Ernst Bloch, Max Bruch, Richard Strauss, Robert Schumann and Edward Elgar.
Julius Berger is known for his big commitment of contemporary compositions. He published remarkable CD´s, that are known all over the world, featuring the works of John Cage, Toshio Hosokawa and Sofia Gubaidulina.

In 1811 he gave up conducting and performing in public but continued to compose; many of his most admired works come from these last 15 years of his life.
