anford Marsalis, Mark Turner – just to name a few. It will certainly remain a secret why Garzone has not become as well known as the cited colleagues. When you mention that to him, he just shrugs it off. Relaxed, he points out that he has been able to play with almost all the big names in jazz his age or younger; a list of them would go beyond the context of this text. Reference to the fact that he was able to bring home a Grammy with Joe Lovanos Nonett should suffice. And that his contributions are by far not only in demand in jazz; the list of the bands, who have requested his services, ranges from Aerosmith to New Kids on the Block. He is currently teaching at the renowned Berklee School of Music, among other places. He is also the originator of
a special improvisation concept, the "Triadic Chromatic Approach" with corresponding teaching manuals.
Music from one mold, composed by an amazing drummer and with unparalleled ensemble playing. The musicians seem to be bound by a far-reaching spiritual kinship, so that in phases of almost free improvisation, nothing sounds as if it were by chance or at random, but instead you can almost feel the will of a common expression.

Er zeugt von dem Respekt, den nicht nur er, sondern auch Garzone´s Schüler uneingeschränkt äußern würden: Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis, Mark Turner – um nur einige zu nennen. Es wird wohl ein Geheimnis bleiben, warum Garzone es noch nicht erreicht hat, den Bekanntheitsgrad der genannten Kollegen vorweisen zu können. Darauf angesprochen, lässt ihn das aber kalt. Er verweist dann entspannt darauf, dass er erstens mit nahezu allen Größen des Jazz, seines Alters oder jünger, spielen konnte – eine Liste würde diesen Rahmen sprengen. Es soll der Verweis darauf genügen, dass er mit Joe Lovanos Nonett einen Grammy einheimsen konnte. Und dass sein Beitrag bei Weitem nicht nur im Jazz gefragt ist: von Aerosmith bis New Kids on the Block reicht die Liste der Bands, die seine Dienste angefordert haben. Zur Zeit unterrichtet er u.a. an der renommierten Berklee School Of Music. Von ihm stammt auch ein spezielles Improvisationskonzept, der so genannte „Triadic Chromatic Approach“ mit entsprechenden Lehrbüchern.
Jacek Kochan, gebürtiger Pole, wanderte zu Beginn der 80er Jahre nach Amerika aus, auf der Suche nach persönlicher und musikalischer Freiheit. Er wohnte zunächst in New York, nahm Unterricht bei u.a. Jaco Pastorius und Mike Clark. Danach zog es ihn nach Kanada, wo er seine Studien fortsetzte – nicht nur Schlagzeug, Percussion und Vibraphon standen im Fokus, sondern immer auch Weiterbildung im Bereich Komposition und Arrangement. In seiner Zeit in Montreal spielte er mit u.a. Oliver Jones und Michael Donato, und nach dem Umzug nach Toronto 1990 vermehrt mit Jerry Bergonzi, John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler und vielen anderen. 1995 schließlich kehrte er zurück nach Polen und nutzt seither seine zahllosen Kontakte, um Konzerte auf höchstem Niveau in Polen und Europa zu spielen. Und nicht zu vergessen: er ist darüber hinaus auch ein gefragter Komponist und Arrangeur, auch im Bereich der aktuellen klassischen und in der Theater-Musik. Daneben entstanden über ein Dutzend CDs mit ihm als Leader, die Liste der Sidemen beinhaltet Namen von Gary Thomas, Jerry Bergonzi, Cuong Vu, Dave Tronzo, Greg Osby, Franz Hautzinger und mehr. Dominik Wania sollte man nicht aus den Augen und den Ohren verlieren: Noch immer ist er nur einem kleinen Kreis bekannt (die ihn aber umso mehr schätzen: er begleitete u.a. Tomasz Stanko, Dave Liebman, Gary Thomas, George Garzone, Eddie Henderson, Nguyen Le und Don Byron!), aber er ist vielleicht der mit der größten Anzahl an Preisen überhäufte polnische Jazzmusiker – wen das en Detail interessiert, mag seine Website besuchen. Aber es genügt auch, seine musikalischen Beiträge auf dieser Aufnahme anzuhören: selten hört man so geballt dynamische Varianz, melodischen Ideenreichtum, ungewöhnliche rhythmische Einfälle von einem Pianisten – man sollte sich den Namen merken.
Andrzej Swies gehört zu den jungen aufstrebenden Bassisten in Polen, der nun auch über sein Land hinaus Aufmerksamkeit erregt hat, und an der Seite von Lee Konitz, Adam Pierończyk und Zbigniew Namysłowski spielen konnte. Seine aufmerksame und prägnante, aber nie aufdringliche Begleitung wird immer wieder von seinen Kollegen hervor gehoben – und auf dieser Aufnahme wieder bestätigt. Wie gut das Quartett harmoniert, konnte man bei zahlreichen Auftritten in renommierten europäischen Clubs und Festivals erleben. Für alle, die das nicht live erleben konnten, ging die Band ins Studio. Und wir sind froh, das Ergebnis nun hören zu können: Musik aus einem Guss, komponiert von einem erstaunlichen Schlagzeuger, und ein Zusammenspiel, das seinesgleichen sucht. Eine tiefe Seelenverwandtschaft scheint die Musiker zu verbinden, so dass selbst in Phasen nahezu freier Improvisation nichts nach Zufall oder Beliebigkeit klingt, sondern der Wille eines gemeinsamen Ausdrucks geradezu fühlbar ist. Ob Intensive lyrische Passagen, temperamentvolle Ausbrüche, nachdenkliche Soundcollagen, eruptive Soli, swingende Einlagen – die Klammer ist der gemeinsame Wille der Gestaltung.

Dominik Wania (piano)

Dominik Wania is someone that you should not lose sight of, someone who really deserved to be listened to. He is still only known in small circles (who appreciate him all the more; among others, he has played with  Tomasz Stanko, Dave Liebman, Gary Thomas, George Garzone, Eddie Henderson, Nguyen Le and Don Byron!), but he is perhaps the Polish jazz musician who has won the greatest number of prizes. Jacek Kochan, born in Poland, emigrated to America at the beginning of the 80s searching for personal and musical freedom.  He first lived in New York and took lessons from Jaco Pastorius and Mike Clark, among others. Then he moved to Canada where he continued his studies. His focus was not only on drums, percussion and vibraphone, but also further studies in the areas of composition and arrangement. During his time in Montreal, he played with Oliver Jones and Michael Donato, among others, and increasingly with Jerry Bergonzi, John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler and many more after he moved to Toronto in 1990. He finally returned to Poland in 1995 and has used his innumerable contacts since then to play concerts...
