About the album
'King Of My Song' is the title of Heike Kraske and Uwe Arenz's 2011 debut album on which Jens Neufang, baritone saxophonist from the WDR Big Band, can be heard as a guest musician. As a trio, they now present 'Unspoken' as their latest album together. Jens Neufang, a woodwind multi-instrumentalist virtuoso, adds to the warm, flexible voice of Heike Kraske and the dynamically sensitive playing of guitarist Uwe Arenz. The three musicians lend their very own sound to original compositions, jazz standards and sophisticated Latin and pop songs. They seem to almost capture them with complex rhythms, swinging grooves and nuanced improvisation.
Remarkably, the instrumentation on this production, with no less than five different guitars and six different woodwind instruments, helps the minimalist trio line-up attain an amazingly varied range of sounds. The key to this diversity, and almost a recurring theme through the music, is Heike Kraske's extremely expressive voice, whether performing lead or scat.
Subtle and finely engraved nuances in playing are the trio's main strengths – and with much remaining ostensibly 'unsaid', it becomes all the more inviting to explore. Like 'Unspoken', inspired by an unresolved love story and originally an instrumental composition by Uwe Arenz, the added poetic lyrics and beautiful flute arrangement by Pablo Paredes allow it here to fully bloom.
