About the album

Kendra Shank, acclaimed for her "delectable voice" (Time) and "breathtakingly original concept" (Boston Globe) joins master guitarist John Stowell who "seems to pull arching motifs out of thin air, eschewing clichés" (All About Jazz), in this co-led project. The interactive duo pushes boundaries with a personal mix of Stowell originals (some with Shank's lyrics), reimagined jazz standards, a Fred Hersch/Norma Winstone song, a folk song medley, and free improvisations. Moods range from intimate tender ballads to mixed meter romps, joyous swing, and the evocatively experimental. Stowell plays pianistic chords and rich unexpected harmonies on a colorful array of guitars: electric, steel string acoustic, nylon acoustic, and fretless. In addition to her compelling interpretations of lyrics, Shank improvises multi-layered wordless collages using an electronic looper and other textural effects, functioning as an instrumentalist in organic interplay with Stowell.
Born of an impromptu Manhattan studio session, New York Conversations captures the playful, conversational synergy that results from this duo's two-decade collaboration.

Kendra Shank

Recognized as 'one of the top jazz singers around today' (Scott Yanow, L.A. Jazz Scene), Kendra Shank’s warm voice and subtle improvising style have drawn enthusiastic response from fans and the media. Her adventurous, genre-bending approach is influenced in part by her early roots as a folksinger-guitarist, a residency in Paris, and studies with pioneering vocalist Jay Clayton. Shank’s critically-acclaimed debut CD, Afterglow (Mapleshade, 1994), was co-produced by jazz legend Shirley Horn. This was followed by Wish (Jazz Focus, 1998), which charted on jazz radio, was named “Top 10 of the Year” in Jazziz magazine, and put Ms. Shank among 'Talent Deserving Wider Recognition' in the Down Beat International Critics Poll. In 1999 Shank formed her current New York ensemble...

This ensemble is also featured on her previous release, A Spirit Free: Abbey Lincoln Songbook (Challenge Records CR73253, 2007). Shank has appeared on NPR's JazzSet and Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz and performs internationally in clubs and festivals. She was guest guitarist on Abbey Lincoln's CD Over The Years (Verve, 2000) and has been a vocal guest with Bob Dorough, Jay Clayton, and Peter Leitch.

John Stowell

Roaming the world with his guitar over the last 40 years, John Stowell has developed significant musical relationships with numerous artists along the way, including Swedish guitarist Ulf Bandgren who has been a consistent and inspired partner for ten years. Last heard together on their 2012 duo recording, 'Throop,'  they gathered in Boston in the spring of 2016 to record this quartet set with the accomplished rhythm section of bassist Bruno Raberg and drummer Austin McMahon. The band's easy chemistry, engaging original compositions and rhythmic vitality make for a compelling and entertaining listen. 'John Stowell plays jazz, but he doesn't use any of the cliches; he has an incredible originality. John is a master creator.' - Larry Coryell.
