About the album

“I began Passades in early 2002 working with the creative possibilities of music software which captures sounds like a freeze-frame in video, making sound movement stop, or go forwards or backwards slowly. A Passade is an equestrian term meaning to move backwards and forwards over the same space.

For raw material I used extracts from previous compositions of mine which were fed into the software which would freeze them, and by mouse manipulation I would slowly move the material backwards and forwards onscreen to see if there was potential for keeping those particular extracts. On a trial and error basis I collected almost three hours of material in this way over a period of two and a half years. Each successful Passade or passing over the material (real-time hand to eye to ear co-ordination — I felt almost like a calligrapher) lasted about two to four minutes before it began to lose its charm. Almost without exception, none of the original raw material is recognisable in its new frozen environment.

I began to notice very quickly that some of these successful experiments crossfaded very well into each other. The initial result of this coalescing was a series of ‘sets’ containing 3 or 4 related Passades each. I also discovered that melodic material used in one set overlaid itself very well with material in other sets and so links began to be made from set to set as well as within sets. nBecause of an obsessive streak in my personality I couldn’t stop the proliferation of new material even as I was finding connections within older material.
By the Autumn of 2003, 49 minutes of Passades were ‘finished’ (4 sets plus an Opening and Closing), although I tend to find important small connections in pieces which need time to be discovered, which greatly improve them — revising pieces several times before I think of them as being ‘really finished’. In the midst of continuously making new material for Volume 2, Passades — Volume 1 (the 49 minutes) was finally completed on New Year’s Day 2004 and released on the Dutch label BV Haast later in the year.

In thinking about what to develop and include on Volume 2 I realised that not all the material I had would fit in with other material and wasn’t good enough on its own, so deciding against the possibility of a third volume, I began the difficult task of shedding about 40 minutes of Passades. When I began to develop the music you hear here I discovered, as in Passades — Volume 1, that I could find places where melodic material could resurface in different pieces, and further, that some melodic material from Volume 1 worked very well in places in Volume 2. These melodic transplantations to new environments took a lot of time to discover and for every one that worked, many more didn’t. At all times the material guided me as I guided it. All is connected now in many subtle ways.

I have introduced the 3 Link/seperators and a piece from 2000 ‘The I’ as contrasting material. As I come to the end of this composition project which lost me so much sleep (mainly through excitement) I realise that exactly 3 years of my life have passed. During that time I began to experience the feeling that there was another kind of Passade at work in the music, in tandem with the technical one I have described — one with a time dimension. There is an ancient voice in this music which seems to travel through the present into the future, then back again into the past.”
