About the album

Nominated posthumously " Leipzig Chorales ", the eighteen chorales BWV 651-668 are great Prelu- des, most of which are written for organ with two manuals and pedal. Bach composed these works du- ring the Weimar period (1708-1717) but he retou- ched or reworked many of them during his final years in Leipzig (1739-1750). The final versions were copied in a book called the " Leipzig Autograph ". This collection assembles further Trio Sonatas and Canonical Variations. With regard to the drafting, only fifteen of the eighteen chorales are autographs: BWV 666 and 667 were copied by his disciple and son-in-law Johann Christoph Altnickol, BWV 668 is an anonymous hand. BWV early versions, those of Weimar, are referenced a or b.

Preceded on this recording by a four-part harmo- nization from the collection of 371 chorales "Joh. Seb. Bachs vierstimmige Choralgesänge" published in Leipzig between 1784 and 1787 by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Philipp Kirnberger, the eighteen chorale preludes are spread over two CDs. The program of the first " Leipzig Chorales (I) (com- ponent vol. 8 Complete Organ Works), recorded on the organ of Johann Patroclus Möller (1738) in Ma- rienmünster (Westphalia), is complemented by that of volume 9 entitled " Leipzig Chorales (II) ", recor- ded on the organ of Johann Berenhard Klausing (1717) in Oelinghausen (Westphalia). On each part the chorales are supervised by one of the great fan- tasies of Bach.
