About the album

The recent discovery of Telemann's Fantasias for viola da gamba solo has inspired many musicians to study and perform these masterpieces. Rainer Zipperling and his friends Saskia Coolen (recorder) and the newly appointed musical director of the Netherlands Bach Society Shunske Sato (violin) decided to release a 3 CD album containing all the solo Fantasias Telemann wrote for their instruments. Their solo performances are crowned with one Trio Sonata featuring all three musicians. This album available in a hand numbered, 1000 copy limited edition.

De recente ontdekking van Telemanns Fantasia’s voor viola da gamba solo heeft vele musici geïnspireerd om deze meesterwerken te bestuderen en uit te voeren. Rainer Zipperling en zijn vrienden Saskia Coolen (blokfluit) en Shunske Sato (viool), die Jos van Veldhoven zal opvolgen als artistiek leider van de Nederlandse Bachvereniging, besloten om een driedelige verzameling met alle solo Fantasia’s die Telemann voor hun instrumenten schreef uit te brengen. Hun solo-uitvoeringen worden bekroond met een Triosonate waarin alle musici meespelen.

Dit unieke album is het eerste album waarop alle drie de solo Fantasias van Telemann zijn opgenomen, en is beschikbaar in een met de hand genummerde beperkte uitgave met een oplage van 1000 exemplaren.

Die jüngste Entdeckung von Telemanns Fantasias für Gambe solo hat viele Musiker dazu animiert, diese Meisterwerke zu studieren und aufzuführen. Rainer Zipperling und seine Freunde Saskia Coolen (Blockflöte) und der erst kürzlich zum musikalischen Leiter der Niederländischen Bachgesellschaft ernannte Shunske Sato (Violine) entschlossen sich, eine 3-CD-Aufnahme mit allen Solo-Fantasias zu veröffentlichen, die Telemann für ihre Instrumente geschrieben hatte. Ihre solistischen Darbietungen krönt eine Triosonate mit allen drei Musikern. Dieses Album ist als handnummerierte, auf 1000 Exemplare limitierte Edition erhältlich.

In 2012, recorder player Saskia Coolen discovered by chance, in the Historical Museum in Den Briel, the head joint of an alto recorder, made by the instrument maker Engelbert Terton. She brought in the recorder builder and expert Jan Bouterse who thoroughly cleaned and restored the joint. He suggested that there might well be other playble recorders to be found in private collections. In the years since then, Saskia’s research has turned up six forgotten eighteenth-century recorders: five altos and a sopranino. On this album she plays these rediscovered recorders, together with gambist Rainer Zipperling and harpsichordist Patrick Ayrton, in eighteenth-century music by De Fesch, Nozeman, Van Wassenaer and other contemporaries. Shunske Sato (violin)

Shunske Sato is a violinist known for his distinctive and engaging performances on both modern and historical instruments. Equally in demand as concertmaster, chamber musician, soloist and teacher, the diversity of his activities reflect his versatile and resourceful nature. Resident in The Netherlands, Shunske serves as concertmaster of Concerto Köln and the Netherlands Bach Society, and is often invited as a guest concertmaster for ensembles such as the Freiburger Barockorchester and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. In 2013 he was invited to join the faculty of the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he teaches violin in the context of historical performance practice. He has performed as soloist with American and European orchestras such as the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bavarian Radio Philharmonic, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio...

He has performed as soloist with American and European orchestras such as the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bavarian Radio Philharmonic, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and National Symphony Orchestra, as well as with orchestras in Japan such as the NHK Philharmonic and Osaka Century Orchestra. Shunske has recorded violin concertos by Haydn and Mozart with Orchestra Libera Classica under the baton of Hidemi Suzuki, and in 2011 gave the first performance of Paganini’s second violin concerto on historical instruments with the Academy of Ancient Music. His discography is extensive and most notably includes works for solo violin by Telemann, Paganini and Eugène Ysaÿe.
In the roles of both soloist and concertmaster Shunske has worked with numerous conductors, including Ivor Bolton, Richard Egarr, Christopher Hogwood, and Kent Nagano In 2010 Shunske was awarded Second prize and the Audience prize at the 17th International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig. He also won the Young Concert Artists award at the age of 12, the youngest ever to date.
Born in Tokyo, Shunske immigrated to the US at the age of four. He studied at the Juilliard School in New York, Conservatoire National de Région in Paris and Hochschule für Musik und Theather in Munich. His teachers include Chin Kim, Dorothy DeLay, Masao Kawasaki, Gérard Poulet, Eiichi Chijiiwa and Mary Utiger.

Georg Philipp Telemann

Georg Philipp Telemann (14 March 1681 – 25 June 1767) was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. After studying in Magdeburg, Zellerfeld, and Hildesheim, Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law, but eventually settled on a career in music. He held important positions in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach, and Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of the city's five main churches. While Telemann's career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died only a few months after their marriage, and his second wife had extramarital affairs and accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving Telemann.
Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in history (at least in terms of surviving oeuvre) and was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German composers of the time—he was compared favorably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made Telemann the godfather and namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and to George Frideric Handel, whom Telemann also knew personally. Telemann's music incorporates several national styles (French, Italian) and is even at times influenced by Polish popular music. He remained at the forefront of all new musical tendencies and his music is an important link between the late Baroque and early Classical styles.
