About the album

After explorations of the oeuvre of Bach and Couperin, he now devotes an entire programme to the keyboard music of Domenico Scarlatti. Although the latter called his sonatas Essercizi per gravicembalo (literally ‘studies for harpsichord’), they are so much more than finger exercises. Each and every one of them is a baroque gem, full of sparkling melodies and Spanish swing. Their virtuosity barely camouflages a warm melancholy. Philippe Thuriot improvises these enchanting sonatas together and breathes new life into them with his accordion.

In 2015 he recorded the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach for the Warner Classics / Klara label. In 2018 he recorded a second solo disc with own arrangements of music by Couperin and Ravel. Both cd’s were highly praised by the international music press and received favourable reviews.
He performed at numerous international festivals such as Crete Senesi in Tuscany, in honour of the 70th birthday of Philippe Herreweghe. He also played together, amongst others, with Louis Sclavis, Ellery Eskelin, René Lussier, Uri Caine, Mark Feldman and Maria Schneider, each of them a master in the jazz scene.

Composer(s)

Domenico Scarlatti

Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was an Italian composer who spent much of his life in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families. He is classified primarily as a Baroque composer chronologically, although his music was influential in the development of the Classical style and he was one of the few Baroque composers to transition into the Classical period. Like his renowned father Alessandro Scarlatti, he composed in a variety of musical forms, although today he is known mainly for his 555 keyboard sonatas.
