Vincent Herring interviewed on BBC Radio
Saxophoneplayer Vincent Herring will be in the spotlight in England on BBC Radio 3 this weekend on Sunday 23.45 hours English time. On the BBC website one can read:
"Julian Joseph interviews Vincent Herring, a saxophonist who is a major voice on the international jazz scene."Herring" first toured Europe and the United States with Lionel Hampton's Big Band in the early 1980's. As he developed his musicianship, he began to work with Nat Adderley, a liaison that continued for nine years. Along the way he worked and/or recorded with Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Hayes, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. Vincent also appeared as a guest soloist at Carnegie Hall with John Faddis and The Carnegie Hall Big Band. Just before his recent show at Ronnie Scott's, Herring was interviewed by Julian Joseph about his current "Morning Star" album which brings out Herrings' funk/ fusion feel to his music."
In The Netherlands, Vincent Herring and his band Earth Jazz gave a great concert in Porgy and Bess in Terneuzen the other day (March 7th). Tehy played a lot of material from the new cd 'Morning Star'. Journalist Mischa Beckers of the jazz website Jazzenzo writes about this concert:
"Fast bop-lines came as a natural flow out of his saxophone. Of course he has a rich experience and Coltrane and Adderly are clear influences in his playing. During the whole concert Herring played with volume and with a round and full tone. "
Herring is like a sort of a stand-up comedian during his concerts. He takes his time in talking in a funny way to the audience. The band played for three and a half hours in two energizing sets in Prorgy and Bess.
