About the album

Nino Gvetadze: “Chopin looked back and evoked for us the story of his life in his 24 Preludes. Through the medium of these works he revealed his deepest fears and sorrows, but also the beauty and integrity of his heart. The story of these ghosts culminates in tolling bells which are, in Cortot’s words, “of blood, of earthly pleasure, of death...” But what follows? A pause: silence, timeless solitude, in the Etude Op.10, No.6. Then, suddenly, the soul wakes up and waltzes into space. The album ends with the Scherzo No.2, “like a charnel house”, or house of the dead, as Chopin apparently described the opening – yet the finale sounds like a celebration of life. And so our ghostly journey ends with fireworks, with smiling and shining, looking far into the future...”

Doch was folgt?

Frédéric Chopin is one of the greatest composers of the Romantic piano tradition. He was a master in making the small form great. His ballades, mazurkas, polonaises, preludes, etudes and nocturnes all belong to the most popular standard works for piano ever written.  As a child prodigy, Chopin grew up in a middle class family, who lived among the literati of Warsaw. When in 1830 the November Uprising broke out in Poland, the twenty year old Chopin stayed in Vienna. He became an exile and never returned to his mother country. He eventually settled in Paris.  He avoided public concerts, but he did like performing in small settings, such as salons and at home for his friends. This way, Chopin built a...

As a child prodigy, Chopin grew up in a middle class family, who lived among the literati of Warsaw. He avoided public concerts, but he did like performing in small settings, such as salons and at home for his friends. This way, Chopin built a reputation as an exceptional pianist, teacher and composer.
Chopin brought a unique synthesis between the Viennese bravado and the French/English lyric style. Even though his pieces often are technically very demanding, the focus was always on creating a lyric expression and poetic atmosphere. He invented the instrumental ballade, and brought salongenres to a higher level with his many innovations and refinements.

Classic Voice, 05-4-2019

Gvetadze seems always to have the whole in mind, and as a result her collection seems something more than a sum of its parts.
Fanfare, 02-7-2018

She really does Chopin right— and many, many pianists who are good at lots of other music fail us completely in Chopin.
AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE, 18-5-2018

Nino Gvetadze convinces manually and musically in every beat, above all the slender lightness and tonal transparency of her playing are exemplary.
Fono Forum, 01-3-2018

Chopin, in the hands of Gvetadze, is almost a prayer to universal beauty.
Scherzo, 28-2-2018

Nino Gvetadze evokes the spirits on her amazingly dark Steinway D grand piano and interprets these 24 engnimatic miniatures as dream pictures of the night, as poetic reflections on the unavoidable existence of death... A thrilling recording!
Crescendo.de, 16-2-2018

Gvetadze makes the listener - partly thanks to the wonderful recording - companion of the most intimate thoughts.
Pianist, 09-2-2018

When it comes to Chopin and piano recordings this one is very much the real thing, and richly deserving of your urgent attention.
Musicweb, 07-2-2018

Her touch is light, her technique transparent, the phrases beautifully elastic and the atmosphere generally dreamy-mindful.
Luister, 19-1-2018

Nino Gvetadze played atmospheric and with a lot of imagination.

Dreamy piano playing with delicate passion
Dagblad de Limburger, 11-12-2017

The star of the Georgian pianist Nino Gvetadze rose quickly when in 2008 she won the second prize, the audience award and the press prize at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition. Now she releases a CD on Challenge Records with the preludes by Frédéric Chopin with the meaningful title Ghosts.
Pianist, 17-11-2017

With her profound and insanely well-timed play, Gvetadze penetrates into the soul of the listener.
Klassieke Zaken, 17-11-2017

Nino Gvetadze deliberately looks for dramatic feelings in Chopin’s Preludes, she emphasizes sorrow and fear, but also joy and optimism. She digs deep into the composer’s soul, and her technical skills and her taste allow her really appealing performances.
Pizzicato, 09-11-2017

It is enchanted with a tear. A bigger compliment hardly seems possible.
Opus Klassiek, 16-10-2017

Poetical Préludes of Chopin by Georgian pianist Nino Gvetadze. Warm, highly recommended.

AVROTROS, 06-10-2017

This is a remarkable recital of ghosts and magic. As far as I’m concerned the ‘smiling and shining future’ should be hers’.
HRAudio, 06-10-2017

It is a grand vision of the Preludes, which, in addition to the famous recordings of the past, continues to flourish.
