About the album

Los Angeles-based composer/arranger/orchestrator Jeremy Levy has co-led the Budman/Levy Orchestra since 2007, played lead trombone with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and has been involved in the upper reaches of the film, TV and video game music industry for well over a decade. Looking to create an ambitious project for his own jazz orchestra, Levy was inspired to adapt Gustav Holst's symphonic masterpiece while attending a performance at the Hollywood Bowl in 2017. With its harmony straddling romantic and jazz languages while its massive scale lent inspiration for the largest of film orchestrations over the decades, the suite provided Levy with sweeping and dynamic materials to develop. Der in Los Angeles lebende Komponist/Arrangeur/Orchestrator Jeremy Levy ist seit 2007 Co-Leiter des Budman/Levy Orchestra, spielte Lead-Posaune mit dem Brian Setzer Orchestra und engagiert sich seit weit über einem Jahrzehnt in den oberen Lagen der Film-, Fernseh- und Videospielmusikindustrie. Auf der Suche nach einem ehrgeizigen Projekt für sein eigenes Jazzorchester wurde Levy inspiriert, das symphonische Meisterwerk von Gustav Holst zu adaptieren, während er 2017 eine Aufführung in der Hollywood Bowl besuchte. Jeremy Levy (conductor)

Composer/Arranger/Orchestrator, Jeremy Levy has worked in nearly every medium in Los Angeles. As a composer, he recently wrote music for Magic the Gathering, Star Wars: Battlefront I and II, and Star Wars: The Old Republic - Knights of the Fallen Empire. As an orchestrator, he adds his musical touch to scores in film, television, and video games. Recent projects include Frozen 2, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Dunkirk, Hotel Transylvania 3, Spiderman (videogame), LEGO Ninjago, Godless, Trolls, The Peanuts Movie, Minions, Empire, and The Book of Life. As an arranger, he has written for the National Symphony Orchestra featuring Babyface and Common, The Metropole Orkest, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Lindsey Stirling, Katharine KcPhee, and Matthew Morrison.
After receiving a Master's Degree from the University of Miami in composition, Levy headed to Los Angeles to pursue his career. He currently leads the Jeremy Levy Jazz Orchestra and just released his second jazz album on OA2 Records: "The Planets: Reimagined," a modern big band jazz reinterpretation of the famous classical suite by Gustav Holst.
Since 2007, Levy has co-lead the Budman/Levy Orchestra featuring LA's top musicians. His first album, "From There to Here" was released on OA2 records. in 2012.

Gustav Holst is a composer nobody seems to know, evne though everyone knows The Planets. This lack of relative fame is a mystery, because the quality of his works for choir and orchestra (including some amazing works for brass orchestra) is often high. Perhaps this can be explained by his aversion to public appearance. After the succes of The Planets he focused on more introvert topics, which resulted among others in his beautiful Hymn of Jesus from 1917. This is typically a work which upon first listening makes you wonder why it's not better known (even though allegedly the work was quite succesful during its own time). There is, however, also something up with the continuity of Holst as a composer, as if technical challenges stimulated...

Grove music Online quoted Holst's daughter Imogen regarding this remarkable phenomenon: 'As soon as he made his point, he stopped'.
