Jun Märkl is a German conductor, born in Munich. He is the son of a Japanese pianist and a German violinist. From 1991 till 1994 he was music director at the Saarländischen Staatstheaters in Saarbrücken and from 1994 till 2000 he was Generalmusikdirector of the National Theater in Mannheim. In February 1999, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera with Il trovatore, and he returned in December 2000 with Turandot.
In 2005, Märkl became music director of the Orchestre National de Lyon (ONL), with which he made several recordings of music by, amongst others, Debussy, Ravel and Olivier Messiaen. Märkl stepped down in 2011. In 2007, he became music director of the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, but stepped down after the season 2011-2012, since he became musical advisor of the Orquesta de Euskadi. In November 2014, Märkl became principal conductor of the orchestra.
