The Camesina Quartet has established itself as one of Germany's leading period string quartets. Through
its recordings of string quartets by Jan Ladislav Dussek and Johann Baptist Vanhal it has made its mark
for outstanding discoveries. The Camesina String Quartet tries to approach historical sound, not only
through the study and application of sources, but also through a constant questioning and pioneering
spirit. The ensemble has appeared at many well-known chamber music venues in Germany and abroad,
amongst others in the Wildt’sche Haus in Basel, at the Haydn Festival in Plzeň, the Lobkowicz-Festival
in Jezeří-castle, the Musical Instruments Museum in Berlin and in Kloster Wennigsen. Since 2014 it
organizes a concert series in Berlin together with the author and musicologist Volkmar Braunbehrens
under the name Transparenzen.
The name Camesina Quartet refers to the Camesina House, where Mozart lived from 1784 to 1787, and
where he played to Joseph Haydn the six string quartets dedicated to him. In this residence perhaps
some of the famous partys where hosted, where Joseph Haydn (first violin), Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf
(second violin), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (viola) and Johann Baptist Vanhal (cello) played quartets
together.
The house is named after the stucco plasterer, who owned the house temporarily and who decorated the
stucco ceiling under which Mozart probably had his study and composed some of his greatest works,
amongst them the six string quarted dedicated to Haydn. www.camesina-quartett.de
