"If you were music, I would listen to you ceaselessly, and my low spirits would brighten up." - Anna Akhmatova

Lisbon Underground

The Lisbon Underground Music Ensemble (L.U.M.E.) is a project originated by the composer Marco Barroso as a vehicle to express his music and ideas in a particular orchestral context rooted in the BigBand model. Comprising musicians with different experiences in the areas of jazz, rock, classical, contemporary and experimental music, the group combines written composition with elements of improvisation, in an eclectic and authorial way. Created in 2006, L.U.M.E. presents in this first release a selection of the repertoire composed by its leader, which articulates the talent and the complicity of a very diverse group of performers and improvisers. Through the dramatization (often with irony) of practices and vocabularies from jazz, rock or classical contemporary music, as well as through incursions in the experimentalism that assaults the edges of these languages, the music of the L.U.M.E. recreates, with originality and pertinence, the BigBand heritage, in this way avoiding its most conventional patterns and opening new and refreshing aesthetic perspectives.
