Matthias Worm

Matthias Worm, born in Berlin, received his first violin instruction at the age of eight. After finishing his secondary studies, he completed studies at the music conservatory “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin, studying viola with Erich Krüger and Alfred Lipka. He has been the principal violist since 1985 in the Robert Schumann Philharmonic in Chemnitz. During this time, he was a soloist in the premieres of viola concerts of Viktor Bruns and Volkmar Leimert and a member of the Robert Schumann Quartet as well as a founding member of the Dresden Sinfonia (founded in 1997) and a member of the Festival Orchestra in Bayreuth. He has given concerts in Germany, Japan, the Czech Republic, the former Soviet Union, and Thailand. He has recorded for CDs and for radio, including a 2004 recording of the original version of Robert Schumann’s string quartets for Sony. In 2015 he performed the Viola Concerto “Surgite Gloriae” by the Armenian composer Vache Sharafyan in several European cities in memory of the Armenian genocide of 1915.
