About the album

Uli Beckerhoff (artistic director of the "Jazzahead" trade fair in Bremen and jazz professor in Essen) drew our attention to this talented singer at Jazzahead: "There is a new voice in Germany with his own and original timbre, great intonation and phrasing – you just got to listen to him!" To tell the truth, Germany does not actually have a surplus of male jazz singers. Roger Cicero, Michael Schiefel and a few others have found an audience. It was that much more pleasant news that there really is an extraordinary voice with a very original expression. And in addition, a composer with the gift for composing simply beautiful, catchy songs. As the icing on the cake, Nils-Christopher writes spiffy, romantic, tongue-in-cheek texts. But the way is actually the opposite; there is the text that fits to a melody – and then a song is created. The singer/songwriter could actually care less whether the genre fits – every category soon becomes too small for him. It's clear that he has learned jazz from the bottom up, and it's clear that his band knows every jazz trick. However, first there is the song. The result is that the band sets off on an adventure – and we are glad to accompany them!

Nils-Christopher (born in 1985) is the name of the band and the first name of the leader Nils-Christopher Vögler at the same time. He learned to play the violin and guitar at an early age, but he was increasingly fascinated by language as the child of an actress. He gained experience in songwriting and composing as a teenager, played in jazz and ska bands and sang in choirs. He started his studies in jazz voice at Folkwang University in Essen under Peter Herborn and Norbert Gottschalk, among others, in 2006. Numerous workshops followed, run by Steve Swallow, David Liebman and Richie Beirachm to name just a few. After he graduated in 2011, he drew attention to himself with his debut...

Pianist Lukasz Flakus was born in Poland, studied in Katowice and Cracow and already was awarded various distinctions in his native country. He is currently studying at Folkwang University in Essen, and he has already done very well in many contests there. Simon Manthey studied in Arnheim (NL) and lives in Cologne. He also continued his studies in master classes under Michael Sagmeister and Marcus Miller, among others, and currently also plays in soul and pop groups. Robert Schulenburg also studied at Folkwang University in Essen. His bass teachers were John Goldsby and Stefan Rademacher, among others. He is the most consistent musical chameleon in the group. He played jazz alongside the exceptional pianist Benyamin Nuss, electro in the trio "The Smack", and techno with DJ accompaniment in clubs. Drummer Claus Schulte is also a fellow student from Folkwang University and learned his trade under Thomas Alkier, inter alia. He is very much in demand as a session, live and studio musician and at home in every style.
