About the album

In March 2014 these musicians met for the first time during the BrokkenBal, the yearly concert I organize with writers at the Amsterdam Bimhuis. From the first rehearsal on, the horns blended, the rhythm section was steaming and we all felt immediately this was a perfect match; a year later we had our first concert as VANBINSBERGEN PLAYSTATION! This dynamic live CD is recorded during our first two concerts.

VanBinsbergen Playstation

With VANBINSBERGEN PLAYSTATION Corrie van Binsbergen picks up the threads of her instrumental earlier bands. After twelve years of mainly focusing on projects with literature and composing for large contemporary ensembles, theater and film, the time was ripe for this energetic all-star superband. Like before there are no boundaries, no limiting styles, but her own: energetic, bold and playful. The music an extremely agreeable and happy amalgam of suspenseful antitheses. Like a fan on facebook reacted: This is the most incredible music. Bebop with a modern twist, I am an instant fan! CVB is probably best known as the leader of Corrie en de Brokken and Corrie en de Grote Brokken, the latter 12-member group incorporating pop/rock vocalists in a skewed mélange of...

Yonga Sun (drums)

Yonga Sun is a musical chameleon. He is praised for his dynamic, inventive and adventurous drumming. Always on-the-edge and in-the-moment he keeps propelling the music to new levels. He is more of a powerful percussive colorist than a drummer in the traditional sense. To him music is like a beautifully flowing river. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow, never the same, yet always clear. Communication and interaction are key elements in his approach, relying on daring and trust between the musicians. He utilizes an extreme dynamic range on his quest to combine simplicity and virtuosity.

As the horn does not have much of a tradition outside the classical world, he has developed a distinctively personal style in which the warm, melancholy sound of the horn takes center stage. Morris started out playing classical music at the age of eight, but could never resist improvising. After a year of studying classical composition in The Hague, he studied jazz horn at the Amsterdam Conservatory. In 2001 he founded "Travelling Light", a platform for pianists to play together. In various Travelling Light projects he played with e.g. Rob van den Broeck, Cor Fuhler, Jozef Dumoulin and Sylvie Courvoisier. He won the Dutch Jazz Competition of 2001 with his trio "On the Line" and organized 15 editions of the multidisciplinary festival:The Evening of the Longest/Shortest Night. Van Veenendaal takes part in an ongoing series of literary concerts around well known Dutch writers. With bass player Meinrad Kneer he founded Evil Rabbit Records, a label for contemporary improvised music. His compositional works are supported by the Performing Arts Fund – a trust for creative music. Recently he has been composing for Calefax reed quintet (featuring Eric Vloeimans), The Amstel Saxophone Quartet, pianist Marcel Worms and 'Bigtet' Tetzepi, featuring Louis Sclavis. The music/soundscape he created for the film 'Film Earth' was nominated for a "gouden kalf", the most important Dutch Award for film. Albert van Veenendaal refers to himself as 'pictorial musician' because of the epical and cinematic character of his music. Improvisation and composition go hand in hand and merge seamlessly. With an open approach and interaction with his fellow musicians he creates musical constructions that are unconventional and intuitive, displaying his unique style that will instantly be recognized. It is important to me to make music without having appointed ideas in advance about how the music is supposed to sound. What I call 'pictorial music' is about passion, risk and skill, not to forget the musician's personality. The intensity of a good concert is like balancing on the edge of a razor blade. I try therefore to approach every concert like a painter will approach his empty canvas. To start from scratch every time and to give myself up into the attempt remains endlessly captivating to me. In his project 'Minimal Damage' Van Veenendaal engages in expanding the sound of a grand piano by preparing it accordingly. At the same time he is interested in collaborating with other art forms such as film, dance and pictorial art.

But since you’re here now, I’m happy to give you some of the highlights: De Bende van Drie is working on a performance called Men on Wire. Vanbinsbergen Playstation: unprecedented concert experience
JazzNu, 10-9-2017

Guitarist and composer Corrie van binsbergen has a lot of experience with the interaction of literary texts with music.
jazzism, 01-5-2017

"The last gives the sound by Darren Hodges a modern twist in A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing. The only jazz standard on this beautiful album."
Jazzism, 01-3-2016

Corrie van Binsbergen's latest band makes catchy music you (once again) can not label. Sometimes dynamic, sometimes charming, beautiful, pleasant, sometimes open, sometimes a little vague, always playful and convincing.
VeraVingerhoeds.nl, 01-2-2016

''Guitarist Corrie van Binsbergen composed a band last year. In first instancy just for here yearly returning Brokkenbal, and for a collaboration with writer Tommy Wieringa. Beautiful variety between duo- and trio- passages together with firm group work''
VPRO Vrije Geluiden, 20-1-2016

[...] After a series of illustrious projects over the years ranging from opera to literary Binsbergen Playstation return to the traditional instrumental band sound. Equipped with a four-piece horn section and lively arrangements and occasionally muggy guitar playing. Just awoken from the contours of the composition is the ensemble in the first part like a sparkling big band to glory.
