About the album

THE COMPOSER ABOUT THE RECORDING:

Con cierto toque de tango (With a certain hint of tango)
Orchestrating Argentine tango does present its challenges. One possible solution is to try to make the orchestra sound as much like a tango ensemble, an “orquesta tipica”, as possible. Another option is to cut a few corners and translate it into an easier language for the more conventional orchestra to decipher. A third is to invent new, unfamiliar solutions. I've done a bit of all three here.

The violin concerto Con cierto toque de tango was commissioned by Hugo Ticciati for O/Modernt in Stockholm, a festival which focuses on reflections of the musical past in the present, an agenda consistent with my own. The title translates to “with a certain hint of tango”. Musically, there’s probably more than just a hint of tango in this concerto, considering that the movements are named after the Argentine dance forms - milonga, zamba and tango.

The concerto is written with one foot firmly planted in Norway, far away from the tango tradition. This gives me a certain freedom to experiment but also provides another more glaring necessity to find those moments and elements that provide the right connection to this tradition. I am delighted to have the likes of Henning Kraggerud on hand to perform the concerto!

I have certainly run the gamut of styles as a composer – everything from tango & salsa to waltz & pols (Norwegian folk dance), from electronica & hiphop to music for films, theatre and dance. With this orchestral album you’ll get an insight into my musical universe “with a certain hint of tango”.

The Norwegian Radio Orchestra was founded by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation in 1946. Its first conductor, Øivind Bergh, led the ensemble in a series of concerts from the main studio that established the basis of its popularity and its status as a national treasure. The orchestra continues to perform in the context of important media events. It is comprised of highly talented classical instrumentalists, yet its musical philosophy has remained the same: versatility, a light-hearted approach, a curiosity for all kinds of music, and an unwillingness to pigeonhole musical styles.

Per Arne Glorvigen (bandoneon)

One of the foremost current day bandoneon players, Per Arne Glorvigen’s contact with the instrument began as late as the age of 25, when after having finished the State Academy of Music in Oslo he moved to Paris and met Argentinian bandoneon maestro Juan José Mosalini. After studying with Mosalini, and several sojourns in Buenos Aires later, Glorvigen began his career as a professional bandoneonist and meetings with tango legends Piazzolla, Pugliese, Salgán and a close friendship with poet Horacio Ferrer have proven critical in this process. In addition to playing tango, Glorvigen has expanded the repertoire of the bandoneon by playing everything from baroque, kletzmer, pop, and last but not least, contemporary music. In addition to playing tango, Glorvigen has expanded the repertoire of the bandoneon by playing everything from baroque, kletzmer, pop, and last but not least, contemporary music. Composers such as Willem Jeths (Holland), Bernd Franke (Germany), Henrik Hellstenius (Norway) and Luis Naon (Argentina/France) have all dedicated concertos to Glorvigen. Among his musical partners are artists and ensembles including Nicolas Altstaedt, Natalie Clein, Marie- Pierre Langlamet, Göran Sölscher, Tango for 3, the Leipziger, Delian, Maxwell, Apollon Musagète and Alban Berg String quartets, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Staatskapelle Dresden, Komische Oper Berlin, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Liverpool Philharmonic, Orchestra Guiseppe Verdi Milano, the Oslo, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Copenhagen (DR) Philharmonic, Russian National Orchestra, Soloists of the Orchestre de Paris, and l’Orchestre National d’ile de France.
His most important collaboration has nevertheless been with violinist Gidon Kremer, with whom he has recorded four CDs and played nearly a hundred concerts worldwide. His main partners today are the members of the Glorvigen Trio, violinist Daniela Braun and the double bassist Arnulf Ballhorn.
Per Arne has also worked as an entertainer and comedian, specialising in language sketches. After studies with Eric Tanguy (composition) and Guillaume Connesson (orchestration) in Paris, Glorvigen finds himself more and more dedicated to composition, and his works have been performed in most European countries. His first CD with fully original compositions was 2019’s Paris, Buenos Aires, Chicago and included cellist Andreas Brantelid and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. The same orchestra is also behind the subsequent double concerto for viola and bandoneon for Eivind Ringstad.
Earlier recordings can be found on Simax, Auvidis, Nonesuch, Sony Classical, Teldec, EMI Classics and Deutsche Grammophon.
