About the album

Modern Lore finds Lage playfully flipping the script he followed on his acclaimed 2016 Mack Avenue debut, Arclight. That album — produced, like Modern Lore, by Lage’s friend and collaborator, the singer-songwriter Jesse Harris — was his first trio set on electric guitar and found Lage inspired by the sounds and the attitude of the freewheeling, pre-bebop jazz era, when, as he puts it, “country music and jazz and swing were in this weird wild-west period.” This time he incorporates the sensibility, if not the outright sound, of early rock and roll, a similarly hybrid form driven by rhythm, personality and a passion for the electric guitar.

Artist(s)

Julian Lage (guitar)

Hailed as one of the most prodigious guitarists of his generation, Julian Lage has spent more than a decade searching through the myriad strains of American musical history via impeccable technique, free association and a spirit of infinite possibility. Though only 30, the New York-based musician boasts a long, prolific resume as sideman (alongside such icons as Gary Burton and John Zorn), duo partner (with Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge and Fred Hersch, among others), and as soloist and bandleader.

Kenny Wollesen (drums)

Percussionist Kenny Wolleson performed on over 30 recordings during the 1990s and, as the decade progressed, gained increasing renown as a musician of astonishing versatility, skill, and ingenuity. He has recorded and toured with all kinds of musicians, from Tom Waits (Wollesonperforms on Waits' 1993 collaboration with William S. Burroughs, Black Rider), to Sean Lennon, to Ron Sexsmith (Wolleson performs on his second album, Other Songs). A founding member of the New Klezmer Trio, Wolleson is also all over N.Y.C.'s downtown jazz and avant-garde musicians' recordings, and has been so active as to tour with Bill Friselland Myra Melford in the same month.

Jazz&Mo, 01-9-2018

Guitarist Julian Lage has come up with some very strong melodies for this album.
Jazzism, 26-4-2018

All compositions were made by him, in his own words, while he was passing drumgroves on his iPad and improvising on them. Go on with it, because they are stunning.
Gitarist, 23-3-2018

'Modern Lore' is especially melodically very strong.
Jazzflits, 15-3-2018

Definitely recommended for the guitar enthusiasts but the rest should also listen.
Rootstime, 08-2-2018

With 'Modern Lore' he brings a tribute to all those guitarists who made him like he is today.
Draai Om Je Oren, 07-2-2018

Julian Lage plays smoothly and tingly
De Volkskrant, 12-1-2018

Modern Lore is once again a beautiful showcase of guitar talent Lage, who plays often masterfully and sometimes brilliantly. Fresh and beautiful album by a master guitarist who has already earned his spurs.
