About the album

Much music and poetry has been written around the themes of faith and doubt. This is our point of departure. Throughout the millennia, humankind has fought over differences of religious, as well as non-religious, conviction. Yet hope is a fundamental aspect of any faith, a common resonance in spite of all differences. We have selected a variety of expressions of faith and doubt. Religious pieces from both Jewish and Christian traditions, mainly based on texts from outside the official liturgy and ceremony, are contrasted with pieces declaring faith in humankind and life before death.

Musically we have chosen to focus on contemporary music, through original compositions and new arrangements based on folk music.

In an ever more interwoven world, where cultures and faiths intersect and clash to an ever-increasing degree, we hope to lift up what unites us.

NOVA Chamber Choir endeavours to develop concert programmes that provide its audiences with unforgettable experiences, and provide the ensemble and its individual singers with musical challenges to grow on. Based in classical tradition and the Nordic sound, it has commissioned new pieces by a range of Norwegian composers. Over the years NOVA Chamber Choir has collaborated with a number of orchestras, soloists and actors. The choir gives regular concerts in and around Oslo, and also frequently travels abroad. It has taken part, and been awarded prizes, in several renowned choir competitions around Europe – most recently 1st prize and a special prize for the best interpretation of a piece from the Romantic era, at the International Chamber Choir Competition Marktoberdorf...

Yuval Weinberg (conductor)

Yuval Weinberg (b. 1990) was the conductor of NOVA Chamber Choir from 2015 to March 2018. He began his musical career at a young age as a singer and conductor of the Li-Ron Children’s Choir in his home country Israel. He studied orchestral conducting at Tel-Aviv University followed by choral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’ Berlin and the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. He has studied with Jörg-Peter Weigle and Grete Pedersen. Weinberg has received a number of awards for his conducting, most recently the Best Conductor Award at the International Chamber Choir Competition Marktoberdorf 2017. In 2015 he was awarded the Gary Bertini Prize for Choral Conductors, and he won first prize at the International Choir Conducting Competition in Wroclaw in 2014. Weinberg is regularly invited to conduct professional ensembles such as the Norwegian Soloists’ Choir, the SWR Vocal Ensemble and the Bavarian Radio Choir. As a part of his work with young singers, he has been the conductor of the Norwegian National Youth Choir, and as of 2019 he will be conducting the EuroChoir. He regularly leads conducting courses for young musicians in Israel and workshops at international festivals.

Kim André Arnesen is one of the most frequently performed classical composers from Norway today. He grew up in Trondheim, and while being a daily follower of MTV, and no one understood why he was such a big The Cure fan at the age of 10, he also played the piano at the music school and was a chorister in the Nidaros Cathedral Boys´ Choir. With a big interest in baroque music, contemporary classical music, and popular music, Kim could have taken many roads, but choral music became his greatest passion. With a big interest in baroque music, contemporary classical music, and popular music, Kim could have taken many roads, but choral music became his greatest passion. As a composer, he had his first performance at the age of 18 with the boys´ choir. Since then he has written music that has been performed by choirs all over the world.

In 2010, his first large-scale work, Magnificat was commissioned and premiered by the Nidaros Cathedral Girls´ Choir. The premiere got an overwhelming feedback leading to several new commissions. A recording was released in 2014 and the album has received excellent reviews in classical magazines.

In 2013 Even when He is silent and Cradle Hymn featured in the TV production "Christmas in Norway" with St. Olaf Choir and Nidaros Cathedral Girls' Choir. In 2016 the last work was performed at The White House for president Barack Obama.

Kim was the Composer-in-residence for the Denver-based choral ensemble Kantorei and Artistic Director Joel Rinsema in their 2015/16 Season.
