About the album

The Journey Continues Spring 2018 I interviewed Morris Kliphuis. Towards the end of the interview Kliphuis – hornist, jazz composer and improviser – spoke about his time in New York.

“The biggest lesson I learnt in New York is that I am European, and jazz is an American music style - originally the way for an oppressed black minority to express their right to freedom. It gives a unique character and energy to this music. But I’m just a boy from Hilversum.”

With this statement Kliphuis offers a peek into the inner world of the new generation of Dutch jazz and improvised musicians as a whole, and that of the millennials more in particular. Nine of these millennials - Morris Kliphuis, Gideon van Gelder, Reinier Baas, Joris Roelofs, Tineke Postma, Ben van Gelder, Simin Tander, Maarten Hogenhuis and Maartje Meijer - recently presented their compositions for the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. They are the jazz influencers of today.

Kliphuis refers to the gap between his personal background and the origin of jazz. In fact, for all millennials this is fundamental. After all, they belong to the fi rst generation to have so many resources to absorb the rich American jazz tradition - like Kliphuis several of the musicians above spent time studying in the USA. But at the same time, they feel a certain ambivalence towards that heritage, wanting to develop their own sound.

The millennials grew up at the dawn of a new, digital age in which thinking outside the box is practically obligatory, and it is not limitations, but the lack of them that present new challenges. More and more jazz music is infl uenced by pop, hip hop and world music. Defi ning the genre by referring to overseas heritage no longer seems appropriate now that this art form ‘had already completed a full life cycle of creation, maturation, obsolescence, and revival,’ as music journalist Nate Chinen states in his book Playing Changes. Nevertheless, jazz is on the move. But where to?

The new album Jazz Influencers is looking for an answer, or rather answers, to that question: if anything, it is the great variety of musical characters on this album that speaks out. At the same time, they share a more inclusive approach to jazz as an art form, which you fi nd in freer form structures, unexpected twists and turns and a wide range of color and sound, embracing both chamber music and minimal music.

The JOC brings this variety to life. Since starting out in 1996, the JOC has developed a wide artistic scope. Almost twenty-fi ve years later, many tours around the world and a change of conductors, the JOC can count itself not only among the best jazz collectives of Europe, but also among the most progressive ones.

On Jazz Influencers the JOC continues the journey which started with its predecessor, the widely and unanimously praised album Crossroads (2018). On that album, with compositions solely by band members, the JOC has made clear it dares to think beyond the canonical jazz idiom.

On the new album the sizzling experience emanating from Crossroads returns, for instance in the way in which rhythmic and harmonic complexity merge effortlessly into the character of the piece. Again, craftsmanship and creativity come together, exciting textures are to be unraveled, and solos sound like graceful crowbars.

The Jazz Influencers was recorded in two days for a live audience. This setting enhances the here-and-now experience of the music. With JOC and The Jazz Infl uencers the JOC is putting itself to the test, disclosing a deep connection with the nine musicians who wrote the music for them.

This album may also be called a statement, because it conveys what jazz music is all about: adventure, the search for new horizons.
Mathijs de Groot Jazz-journalist for the Dutch national newspaper De Volkskrant.

Peter Beets was born on the 12th of June, 1971 in the Hague.
From birth he was surrounded by music: classical from his mother who is a music pedagogue, and jazz from his father who is a gynaecologist with a great love of Oscar Peterson and Art Blakey. This musical family, which includes two older brothers, Marius and Alexander, moved in 1972 to Groenlo, where Peter received his first piano lessons at the age of six. Although originally both parents did not associate the word "musician" with the word "career", music is definitely in the family's blood. Both Marius (1966) and Alexander (1968) become professionals on string bass and tenor saxophone, respectively. After college, Peter studied from 1989 at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He combined his music studies with law school, but the jazz virus matured and he decided to concentrate exclusively on music.
From 1985 the brothers performed together as “The Beets Brothers”. In 1988 Peter won the prestigious Pall Mall Swing Award and a year later the Princess Christina Award. After this point, Peter's career began to rise rapidly. In 1990 the first recording of The Beets Brothers appeared, followed by two more, School is Closed Now (1993) and Brotherwise (1995). In 1996, Peter recorded a remarkable trio album called “First Date”, with drummer Jeff Hamilton, the driving force behind Monty Alexander and Oscar Peterson. Peter became a much wanted pianist both inside and outside the Netherlands, and accompanied, among others, Deborah Brown, Dee Daniels and Holland's "First Lady of Jazz", Rita Reys. In 1998 he finished his conservatory studies, and won the Parisian Prix Martial Solal. He also became the regular pianist of “The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw”. With trombone and jazz legend Curtis Fuller, Peter made a live recording in 1999 and won in that same year yet another prize, the Concours de Solistes de Jazz in Monaco.
More recordings follow: in 2000 “Powerhouse”, in 2001 “All Or Nothing At All” In 2001 he recorded the CD “New York Trio”, with the rhythm tandem Rodney Whitaker and Willie Jones III, the first CD of Peter Beets recorded on the Criss Cross label. After the sequel, “New York Trio Page Two” recorded with the world-famous Larry Grenadier on bas he made a third CD for the label Criss Cross. This time with Reginald Veal on bass and drummer Herlin Riley, known from the group around Wynton Marsalis. In October 2007 his most recent CD appears on the renowned label. This time he chooses to perform without drums, but with the strength of piano, guitar and bass. The CD, called “New Groove”, is recorded in New York featuring Joe Cohn (guitar) and Reuben Rogers (bass). A few songs are recorded with a dutch cast, Martijn van Iterson (guitar) and Ruud Jacobs (bass).
Peter has had very successful tours with his trio in several countries in Europe such as Germany, Switzerland, Finland and Poland as well as in Japan and the US. He played at the famous Birdland Club in New York as a “special guest” for one week.

Jazz-icon Sheila Jordan is so impressed by Simin´s voice that she has taken her into training. „It was a very special encounter“, says Jordan. Simin Tander studied at the ARTEZ conservatoire in the Netherlands, at which she completed her jazz-singing Bachelor and Master of Music with distinction. Through many performances in diverse projects she has made herself a name in the Dutch jazz scene. In the past years she has performed at many festivals, notably at the „North Sea Jazz Festival“ (in 2004 with I Compani and in 2009 with her own quartet), the „Women in Jazz Festival Halle“, the international jazz congress Jazzahead and has been collaborating with well-known musicians like Frans Vermeerssen, Harmen Fraanje, Florian Weber and Eric Vloeimans. In Holland she has achieved several enthusiastic critics and awardings, like the "Young VIP Tour 2010"- a tour through 12 important Dutch Jazz venues, the first price of the "Vlaardingen Jazz Concours", the third price of the "Dutch Vocal Jazz Competition" , the "Jazzimpuls Tour 2011" which consits of 12 concerts through Holland's theatres. In addition to that Simin has already performed at foreign stages, like Catania Jazz Festival/ Sicily, Casa Del Jazz/ Rome, Bohemia Jazz Fest/ Czech Republic.
German thriller fans might know Simin's touching voice from the soundtracks of the cult thriller "Tatort" or two episodes of "Der Kriminalist" (ZDF).
Her debut CD has been recorded lately and will be released in April of 2011 on the German label Neu Klang.

As the horn does not have much of a tradition outside the classical world, he has developed a distinctively personal style in which the warm, melancholy sound of the horn takes center stage. Morris started out playing classical music at the age of eight, but could never resist improvising. After a year of studying classical composition in The Hague, he studied jazz horn at the Amsterdam Conservatory.
