About the album

The power of melodies
Everyone has the natural ability and need to make and listen to music. We experience this every day, whether we are working or are looking for relaxation, are in church or in a bar, are at a party or putting children to bed. The easiest way to make music is by singing songs, especially if you have the tune in your head. Songs – with tunes that everyone knows or quickly learns – provide the best means of connecting people one to another, particularly if they can enjoy it together. It has been shown by science that singing makes you happy: singing produces endorphins, oxytocin and dopamine: hormones and neurotransmitters that constitute the most important triggers of pleasure in our brains.

Centuries ago it was no different. Whereas we nowadays have at our disposal music programs on radio and TV, playlists on Spotify, millions of videos on YouTube and a fast-growing number of concerts via streaming services, people in the past had to make do with the city’s carillon, annual visits to fairs, the church organ and the city musicians such as Jacob van Eyck, who played the recorder in the churchyard of Sint Jan’s in Utrecht. To hear anything more you had to make music yourself. A few played an instrument, however everybody could sing. And there were songs for every occasion. They resounded around the family dinner table, at school, in the streets, in church, outdoors with a lover, at country people’s festivities, at weddings, on journeys, on board ships or passenger barges, at work or in the theatre. This type of song provides the basis for this Top 40 project, which starts from the 40 most commonly used melodies of the period 1535-1750.

Artist(s)

Margot Kalse is a classical alt-mezzo singer, specializing in early music. Kalse is founder and leader of the Trigon Ensemble of medieval vocal music.

Kalse is also an experienced singing teacher and has been a choir conductor since 2010. She has her own singing school and gives vocal training to choirs. Kalse has conducted baroque opera's and choir projects, and was guest director of the Leiden Ekklesia Schola Cantorum. She is the creator and maker of the Top 40 van de Gouden Eeuw (Dutch Golden Age Top 40).

Earl Christy studied with (among others) Toyohiko Satoh, Nigel North and Paul Beier, and gives lute concerts in Europe and the United States. He is a specialist in Renaissance and Baroque music and has done extensive research in archives and libraries across Europe and has published many “forgotten” aspects of the lute. He is in great demand as a continuo player and teacher. As a composer, he explores the technical limits of the lute within the context of the musical language of the 18th century. His works can be heard on the CD “Neue Lautenfrüchte”.

Sebastiaan Ammerlaan started singing when he joined the university choir as part of his viola minor at University College Roosevelt in Middelburg. From 2013 he studied classical singing at the HKU Utrecht Conservatory. First with Jón Þorsteinsson and from 2016–2020 with Selma Harkink. From 2020 he will follow the master Ensemble Singing at the Royal Conservatoire with lessons from Harry van Berne (ensemble) and Gerda van Zelm (solo vocals). He was also taught by David Wilson-Johnson, Jasper Schweppe, Irene Verburg, Kaspar Kröner, Marjan Kuiper and Elisabeth Blom. Sebastiaan sings in the Bach Choir of the Netherlands and NKK NXT and sang with Meesters & Gezellen (2016 to 2018), the Dutch National Opera Academy, Muziektheater Hollands Diep, TENSO Europe Chamber Choir and the Zed Chamber Choir. In 2017 he founded the Ensemble Nieuwe Muziek with soprano Veronika Akhmetchina: an ensemble with a constantly changing line-up for performing freshly written music. With soprano Iris Bouman, alto Hester Westra and tenor Dierick Aartsen, he also sings in Ensemble Cantorex, a vocal ensemble specialized in Renaissance and Baroque music. Esther Kronenburg started singing while studying Italian in Utrecht. She took private singing lessons with Naomi Hanai and Renee Kartodirdjo. In 2008 she started studying Early Vocal Music at the Tilburg Conservatory, where she worked on the repertoire of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Early Baroque under Idikó Hajnal. Esther attended masterclasses with, among others, Jill Feldman, Anne Azéma, Johannette Zomer, Raquel Andueza and Evelyn Tubb. She completed her studies in 2012 and has since then received vocal coaching from Xenia Meijer. Esther mainly performs in an ensemble, with an emphasis on music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. She currently works a lot with ensemble Oriana, the Coprario consort and ensemble Profondamente. She has performed extensively with the Hemony ensemble, Trigon, Voces Pauli and Cantores Sancti Gregorii.
She forms a regular duo with countertenor Peter van Wolferen.
