About the album

To me, human psychology is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Why do we behave and feel as we do? I’ve found out that personalities can be divided into 5 dimensions. One of those dimensions is the extent to which someone can experience “mildness”. In my opinion mildness has to some extent been turned into a stigma, as opposed to a positive character trait. We have collectively become less mild. The distance between people who are less like-minded has grown. Over recent years, that distance has become painfully clear. I started thinking about how we can achieve reconciliation. With ourselves, with each other, with the world around us. So that we can be more contemplative and no longer have to fall back on radical judgment.

Music soothes, and with that deep conviction I wrote the music for this album. I went looking for sounds, chords, whispers and everything that goes with this message. I started by looking at myself. What are my own convictions, beliefs and opinions? What are they based on? Are they true? Because of this inner journey, this has become very personal album. I hope it can take you along on a soothing path, discovering your own thoughts and feelings. Because if we are aware of our own true inner world, I know that we can be kinder to the outside world.

This was written from the perspective of someone who sees that, collectively, we have become less kind and have mostly moved to more radical ways of thinking. She found her music by searching out corresponding colours, noises, sounds words and chords that could put this message across. Marit is convinced that soothing is the first step towards renewed kindness, helping us to achieve a reconciliation with ourselves, each other and everything around us. The Marit van der Lei Nextet was created in 2014 as a collective of musicians at the Utrecht Conservatoire and has now reached its fixed format, in which it has been performing over a number of years. It has become a band of top young musicians who currently represent the "Next Generation" of the jazz scene. The Nextet plays original compositions, creating soundscapes that will transport you to a gentler world. She performs either with her band or sometimes as a solo singer, manipulating her voice with guitar pedal effects to achieve unique pieces. The underlying layers of both hope and despair seem to turn the new music on her album "Clementia" into a quest for security. It is the outstretched hand of trust, searching for peace. Marit is continuously investigating different ways of using her voice; a sigh, a moan, sometimes having a greater impact than words alone could ever achieve.

The beautiful balance between vocals and instrument use gives this disc a soft, yet pervasive character. The underlying message is always the search for reconciliation with others and with ourselves
Jazz & Mo', 01-12-2023

... What ultimately characterizes the music is a great degree of calm and tranquility, a close interaction of all participants, combining many elements of jazz as well as those outside the genre...
Musikansich, 05-11-2023

You are immediately touched by the singer's desire for adventure, her courage to put it into action and the diversity she brings by switching from improvisation to composition. In short, you are often surprised. Marit van der Lei's voice is flexible, expressive and leading. Good qualities to keep up with the craftsmanship that is panting behind her. Technical masterpieces, placed in the music by what you can call the crème de la crème of the young Dutch jazz generation: Kika Sprangers, Jesse Schilderink, Federico Castelli, Marre de Graaff and Willem Romers. They not only create a foundation for the singer, but also build a road with ample diversions to showcase their own skills.
Jazznu.com, 15-10-2023

With a voice that feels like a warm hug Van der Lei calms you down. Sometimes she tells her story with text, but often she needs no words express hersef. A sigh, a groan or whisper - she approaches her voice as an instrument and melts effortlessly together with the brass section.   Van der Lei does not know whether her album can really bring about reconciliation and improve the world. All she can do is reach out and take you into her music, to bridge the gap between the different beliefs and opinions in this world. “That's my bigger goal: to soften.”
Jazzism, 12-10-2023

'I'm going to go think about how reconciliation can take place.' The atmospheric Abide In Ease is one of the eleven pieces with which she wants to change your mind.
Jazzism, 12-10-2023

... She layers her dark organ several times in the opener "I Will Never Get To See", alienates her voice, scats weightlessly through her mystical compositions, which she wrote for the Nextet, and fascinates with an almost brassy phrasing...
