"The Rosso Verona Baroque Ensemble produce a sweet but incisive sound in a church acoustic that adds bloom without significant loss of clarity, even when a harp is added to the continuo."
Gramophone, 01-10-2024Born in 1658, Giuseppe Torelli was one of the biggest composers of this time, He studied violin at the cathedral of San Petrino, his birth city. Later, he studied with Giacomo Perti in Bologna. Giuseppe Torelli is mostly known for his Trumpet Concertos. He was one of the most prolific composers for trumpet of his age. Yet, he also composed plenty of music for strings and from 1668 he was the violist of the "Accademia Filarmonica" in Bologna. At a later time, he also been kapelmeister for ten years in Bavaria. After a short stay in Vienna, he returned to Bologna where he died in 1709. His manuscripts are still preserved in the San Petrino church.
Torelli is also known as the teacher of Francesco Manfredini and his brother, Felice Torelli, had a moderate repuration as a painter in Bologna.

...the Rosso Verona Baroque Ensemble, of international recognition, conspires expertly to highlight both the melancholic depth and the animosity of the three mostly short movements of the sonatas.
The lightness of the touch and the generosity of the interpretative depth that Pietro Battistoni promotes ensure that we enjoy these delectable concerts.

Torelli was undoubtedly an excellent composer, and these pieces are a good contribution to the trio sonata repertoire. It is nice that they are available on disc, and in a very good performance by the Rosso Verona Baroque Ensemble. The ensemble is immaculate, and the players have a very good sense of rhythm, which is especially important as each movement is a dance, which the listener needs to feel.
The ensemble could hardly have made a better start than with this recording of little-known pieces.

They all pass by, the well-known dance forms: Gigha, Sarabanda, Corrente, Alemanda, Gavota, Menuetto and Balletto. They are by no means boring, partly because Torelli has given them a varied stylistic stamp, which means that these pieces certainly make for fascinating listening. Which also says a lot about these performances, because they focus on fun and spirituality (as far as I'm concerned, they can be mentioned in the same breath).
Opus Klassiek, 01-8-2024
The lively and expressive playing of the Rosso Verono Baroque Ensemble, founded by the Veronese violinist Pietro Battistoni, is immediately impressive. The musicians play with great enthusiasm. Nevertheless, one can hear beautiful phrasing and ornamentation in this spontaneous performance. This brings out the best in Torelli’s music.
