About the album

The Codeberg Variations by Andrew Claes & Goeyvaerts String Trio is a live performance born from Claes’ PhD research of Arts, during which he set out to create the world’s first hybrid saxophone, by merging his engineering skills, coding and musical versatility into a single instrument and performance system. Adding to the sonic palette are acclaimed double bass player Pieter Lenaerts and a robotic percussion setup.

The hybrid saxophone captures live performance data in real time which is then fed into musical algorithms, evolving dynamic musical scores for the string quartet to be played at ‘prima vista’. The resulting scores, displayed on screen, are deliberately kept simple to play, allowing room for personal interpretation and even improvisation.

As the generated musical output is shaped by Claes’ musical input, a unique feedback loop emerges. Within it, improvisation influences the algorithmic output, which in turn inspires the next musical gesture.

The continuous stream of generated data is, apart from being visualized as a musical score for the quartet, partly routed to additional synthesizer parts and fed to a robotic percussion setup, consisting of mechanical levers that strike real drums and cymbals via MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface). Sonically, The Codeberg Variations moves between emotionally compelling themes, electronic beat-driven crescendos, spectral ear-candy, while drawing on an anthology of historical serial and aleatoric music.

The central theme of hybridisation results in an amalgam of acoustic and electronic sounds, mixed composition techniques and a musical performance that blurs the boundaries between classical, jazz, electronic, cerebral and emotional music.

While algorithmic composition techniques provide an underlying architectural framework their dynamic inference ensures that each performance is truly one of a kind.

Goeyvaerts String Trio

The Goeyvaerts String Trio was founded in 1997 with the aim of performing exclusively 20th and 21st century repertoire. The trio takes its name from the Belgian composer Karel Goeyvaerts, who played an important role in developments within European new music. The ensemble not only plays existing works but is also active in commissioning new string trios. The Goeyvaerts String Trio consists of Fedra Coppens (violin), Vincent Hepp (viola), and Pieter Stas (cello). The ensemble not only plays existing works but is also active in commissioning new string trios. Their CD featuring string trios by Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, and Alfred Schnittke was released by the renowned international label Challenge Records. This CD received the highest ratings in various magazines and, among other things, a Gold Label from Klassiek Centraal, a nomination for best CD production for the Klara’s, and a recommendation in Gramophone. In 2012, a new CD entitled String Trios from the East was released, featuring trios by Sofia Gubaidulina, Alexander Knaifel, Oleg Paiberdin, and Giya Kancheli. Luister wrote: ‘What the three musicians achieve here in terms of concentration and precision borders on the impossible. The trio then launched Stabat Mater in 2014,

consisting of Arvo Pärt’s Stabat Mater in just intonation and Simeron by Ivan Moody. With the help of more than 500 international investors, the Goeyvaerts String Trio raised £15,000. Muziekcentrum Vlaanderen wrote about the trio: ‘It is well known that they are excellent; that they also achieved this is a testament to their enthusiastic entrepreneurship.’ This CD was showered with superlatives in the press, Editor’s Choice in Gramophone, Luister 10, etc. More recently, this recording was awarded an Edison and the trio was named musician/ensemble of the year by Klara (classical radio station), and the City of Sint-Niklaas also honored the trio with the 2014 Culture Prize.

In February 2016, Whispers of Titans was released, featuring string trios by Nikolaj Korndorf and Henryk Górecki. Their CD with Klang by Wolfgang von Schweinitz was recorded for the Louth Contemporary Music Society in 2020. Charles Wuorinen’s second string trio (2018) is dedicated to the Goeyvaerts String Trio, and its world premiere took place at the Guggenheim in New York. During Stations of the Sun 2019 in Dundalk (Ireland), they performed two world premieres by Linda Catlin Smith and Pascale Criton. In October 2019, they premiered Robin Verheyen’s Blues, Reds and other Songs at AMUZ. Blues, Reds and other Songs was recorded on vinyl together with Marc Copland and Robin Verheyen and released in 2025.

In 2025, a second album was released with music by Robin Verheyen in collaboration with Robyn Schulkowsky based on the works of painter Jakob Smits.

As ensemble-in-residence at the KMSKA, they developed programs around the museum’s renovation and collection, including a project with saxophonist Andrew Claes (STUFF) in which real-time data was used for scores for strings and robots. With the support of their home city of Sint-Niklaas, they curate the annual Passages festival, which brings together local and international talent from different genres.

At the age of twelve, he began playing electric bass as his second instrument with Marc Emmerman, and a year later took up saxophone as his third instrument with Willy Bauweraerts.

After hearing John Coltrane, it soon became clear that the tenor saxophone was his instrument of choice.

Meanwhile, Andrew was also active as a producer of electronic dance music. At the age of seventeen, he made his debut with the club hit Gods of House (Byte Progressive), together with Arno Driessens and Ramon Tapia, under the name Monastic Project.

After completing his general studies in Human Sciences at OLV Pulhof in Berchem and taking additional private saxophone lessons with Ben Sluijs, he enrolled at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in 2000, studying with Jeroen Van Herzeele. In 2001, he continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, with Ben Sluijs and, from 2003 onwards, Kurt Van Herck, with whom he continues to study to this day. During internships and workshops, he further studied with Erwin Vann, Bo Van der Werf and Daniel Stokart.

Meanwhile, he continued composing and producing music for various theatre productions (De salonhelden, Medea, Barre Weldaad, Gruwelpeter), fashion events (Antwerp Landed), films (Tita, Matthias Lebeer), dance music (JMJ The Vision, Raptors Vision Records), solo work (Qinetic), and collaborations with, among others, Jan de Haas, Chantal Willie and Jan Willems, Domien Holthof, and others.

In addition to Muni, Andrew can also be heard in Cosa Nova, an electro-acoustic free-form band for which he develops and performs multimedia concepts (music/dance/video) together with Steven Cassiers, including Between Space & Earth and Exit/Entrance. He also composes and produces for the group.

As a saxophonist, he also performs with Lijm (the group led by Ben Iriks), Cunning Trio (a biweekly gathering at Café Cottonfields in Antwerp with Nicolas Rombauts and Bart Verhulst), Slam (with Bette Crijns), Transglobal Express (a multimedia production by Steven Willemsen), as well as various other groups with changing line-ups.
