About the album

Bert Seager - piano | George Donchev - bass | Nat Mugavero - drums

This recording (March 4, 1999) was made after George Donchev, Nat Mugavero and Bert Seager had been playing as a trio in Boston, every Saturday night for five months. Except for the two standards, the recording features original tunes that were composed spontaneously while the tape was rolling. These beautifully recorded sessions spaciously reflect the depth of respect and trust they share in each other¹s creativity and musicianship. Everyone in this group keeps listening to what’s happening around him, so the music feels like a three-way collaboration, not a showcase for egos. Best of all, the trio take an elemental satisfaction in the material and in playing together.

Pianist Bert Seager has four internationally released compact discs that have won him unanimous critical acclaim. He has led tours with his band in Japan, Canada, Jordan and the United States. He has a masters degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he has been a prominent player on the jazz scene since 1981. Bert has been a recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts grant for jazz and is on the current New England Foundation for the Arts Massachusetts Touring Roster. Bassist George Donchev won a rare full-scholarship to Berklee College of Music after graduating from the Bulgarian Academy of Music. Growing up in a family of professional musicians, George¹s talent was in great demand by musicians who were bridging the gap between the rich and complex heritage of Bulgarian folk music and jazz. He has made numerous recordings with the renowned keval virtuoso Theodosii Spassov. George has also played and recorded with Hal Crook, George Garzone, Bob Gullotti, John Lockwood and Bob Moses.
Drummer Nat Mugavero brings an involvement in the lineage of jazz drumming that spans the decades from the swing era to free jazz. Schooled on the bandstand in the fifties emulating the Count Basie Band, Nat was hired by Alan Dawson to be his regular substitute at the famed Lennie's On the Turnpike and also at Connelly¹s. Nat became part of the house rhythm section that featured pianist Mike Nock and bassist John Neves. Among the many famous musicians they backed up were Sonny Stitt, Zoot Sims, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Green and Joe Williams. In the mid-sixties Nat began his life-long involvement with free playing joining a trio with pianist Lowell Davidson and bassist Kent Carr.
