About the album

The Organ of Saint Sulpice, Paris, is widely considered to be a prime example of the pinnacle of 19th-Century French organ building. Joseph Nolan expertly demonstrates the full capabilities of this mighty organ with this programme of Romantic organ music, performing favourite works by Boëllmann, Elgar, Liszt and Thalben-Ball.

Joseph Nolan (organ)

APRA award-winning British Australian organist Joseph Nolan is hailed as “one of the great organists of our time” (ABC Radio National) and “indisputably one of the world’s finest organists” (Limelight, Australia). Renowned for his artistry—distinguished by “miraculous playing” (BBC Radio 3 Record Review), “towering technique, vivid virtuosity, and inspired interpretive insight” (Gramophone, UK)—Nolan has garnered widespread acclaim, with Fanfare (USA) lauding him as “the Australian counterpart of Cameron Carpenter... an organist with absolutely phenomenal keyboard technique”. Joseph Nolan’s recording of Widor’s Symphony No. 5, captured at La Madeleine in Paris and released on Signum Classics, was awarded Apple Classical’s Editor’s Choice, surpassing 169 other recordings on the platform.
In a remarkable feat, Joseph recorded the complete organ works of Charles-Valentin Alkan, the enigmatic Parisian virtuoso, over just four nights in January 2025. Volume One of the Alkan cycle, recorded on the famous Stahlhuth/Jann organ at Eglise St Martin in Dudelange, Luxembourg, was released by Signum Classics in March 2026.
The critical reaction to the first volume of Joseph’s new cycle of Alkan’s complete organ works for Signum Classics has won universal critical acclaim. Volume one was awarded a review score of 100 per cent and as Album of the Week in Slipped Disc. Norman Lebrecht, reviewing Alkan volume one for Myscena magazine (Canada) commented “Nolan is an organist with a mind of his own and there is nothing like it anywhere on record”.
Limelight Magazine (Australia) awarded the album its Editor’s Choice award stating, “One can only be awestruck by Nolan’s heroism in tackling this fiendishly difficult extravaganza”. The Guardian Newspaper (UK) awarded the album five stars praising Nolan for his “death-defying virtuosity”. Upon release, the album went straight into the top twenty of the BBC Radio Specialist Charts.
Widely acclaimed for his interpretations of Widor’s complete organ works, Nolan’s Widor cycle has received two Gramophone Critics’ Choice awards, innumerable five-star reviews in leading publications, and is recognised as the current benchmark by Gramophone, The Criterion (New York), MusicWeb International, and ClassicalSource. His performances have been broadcast by BBC Radio 3, Pipedreams USA, Radio France, Radio Sweden, ABC Classic, and more.
An exclusive artist with Signum Classics, Gramophone’s Label of the Year, Nolan’s discography is a testament to his musical reputation featuring performances on some of the world’s finest organs in venues including St Sulpice, La Madeleine, St Etienne du Mont, St Sernin, St François de Sales, St Bavo, Haarlem, St Ouen, Rouen, Buckingham Palace, Eglise St Martin Dudelange, Luxembourg, and Berliner Dom, Germany.
In demand as a soloist with leading orchestras, Nolan made his Sydney Opera House debut with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, sharing the stage with renowned US mezzo-soprano Susan Graham under the direction of David Robertson. The concerts received glowing reviews, with Limelight and The Sydney Morning Herald praising Nolan’s refined ear and sensitivity to French repertoire, remarking, “I have never heard the Sydney Opera House organ sound better.” His debut as organ soloist in the world premiere of Mary Finsterer’s Stabat Mater with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne, won both Performance of the Year and Work of the Year at the 2024 Arts (APRA) awards, under the baton of Principal Conductor Ben Northey.
Joseph has also performed as a concerto soloist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra at St Peter’s Cathedral, Canberra Symphony Orchestra at Llewellyn Hall, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra at Petronas Towers, Queensland Symphony Orchestra at QPAC, West Australian Symphony Orchestra at Perth Concert Hall, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, where he performed alongside celebrated Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero and conductor Alexander Shelley on a national tour of New Zealand.
Nolan made his debut in the 2025/2026 Singapore Symphony Season, performing a sold-out concert at Victoria Hall.
Joseph’s formative years were shaped at The Royal College of Music, London, where he studied under Professor Richard Popplewell, won the Canon Bark prize for most promising organ student, graduated with First Class Honours for his BMus recital at Temple Church, and pursued postgraduate studies with Marie Claire Alain in Paris, supported by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust and the Hattori Foundation.
Returning to London, he was appointed to Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace in 2004, regularly performing at Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace, including the inaugural concert on the refurbished Grand Ballroom organ for an esteemed audience. Nolan is notably the first solo artist featured on a commercial recording of the Grand Ballroom organ at Buckingham Palace.
In 2008, Nolan was appointed Master of Music at St George’s Cathedral, Perth, Western Australia, by invitation of the Dean Emeritus, Dr John Shepherd AM. Nolan founded the Cathedral Consort and Cathedral Concert Series in 2009, and they are widely regarded as cultural jewels of Western Australia. The Australian and The West Australian newspapers have lauded the Cathedral Consort as “elite and world class”.
Under Nolan’s guidance, the Cathedral Consort have performed at the Perth Festival, for Musica Viva, and collaborated with The Hilliard Ensemble, The Academy of Ancient Music, and The King’s Singers. “Gloria”, a collaboration between WASO, St George’s Cathedral Consort, and contemporary dance group Co3, conducted by Nolan, was awarded an Australian Performing Arts Mainstage award.
Nolan conducted WASO and St George’s Cathedral Consort at Perth Concert Hall in April 2024 in “Gloria”, featuring Vivaldi’s Gloria and Handel’s Dixit Dominus. This concert was voted one of Australia’s best by Limelight magazine.
In April 2025, Nolan led WASO and St George’s Cathedral Consort in “Devotion and Glory” at Winthrop Hall, earning five stars from Limelight Magazine, with William Yeoman describing it as “an extraordinary performance of an extraordinary work (Finsterer Stabat Mater)”. Joseph Nolan recently made his debut conducting the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and New Zealand Voices at the 2026 New Zealand International Festival.
In recognition of his contribution to French music, the Government of France have awarded Joseph Nolan the medal of Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Western Australia and was conferred its prestigious higher doctorate, Doctor of Letters, in 2018. Nolan’s distinguished career has been the subject of major interviews on Radio National (Australia) and has featured in Gramophone, Choir and Organ, The Organ, The Age (Sydney), Classical Music, and The Australian.
Joseph recorded a commercial album for Signum Classics at the iconic Berliner Dom, home of the legendary 1905 Sauer Organ, in January 2026. This October, Joseph returns as featured soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performing four concerts at Melbourne Town Hall.

Franz Liszt

If you would open any biography of Franz Liszt, you would probably mostly read about his disquiet life as a piano virtuoso, his passionate love life, and the return to his catholic roots at the end of his life. Although all of this might be true, it only scratches the surface of his comprehensive musical personality. Liszt was a pianist, conductor, teacher and organiser, but above all he was a composer of a voluminous, capricious body of work. Even though his piano works formed his core business, he gave rise to the symphonic poem, got rid of the organ's stuffy appearance, and reinvigorated the oratorio. Moreover, with his piano transciptions of Bach's organ works and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, he was an...

Moreover, with his piano transciptions of Bach's organ works and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, he was an advocate of both old and new music.
Together with his son-in-law Richard Wagner, he was in the forefront of the Romantic movement and anticipated the musical revolutions of the early 20th century with his new composition techniques.

Edward Elgar

Eward Elgar was a British composer, who stood on the forefront of the revival of English music around 1900. Many of his works have entered the international concert repertoire, although there are performed more often in Britain than elsewhere. Although Elgar is often considered as a typically English composer, he has primarily been influenced by composers on the European continent. He was contemptuous of folk music and had little respect for English Renaissance and Baroque composers. Instead he was particularly inspired by Dvorák, Händel and Brahms, and the clarity of 19th-century French composers, which resonates through his orchestrations. Elgar was autodidact, and learned to play the organ, violin and viola at an early age within the musical family in which he was brought up. He also composed and arranged music for various ensembles. He became somewhat well-known with his overture Froissart, but only gained international recognition after composing his Enigma Variations in 1899. Currently researchers are still trying to find out which melody Elgar has hidden within the variations.
Other famous works by Elgar are the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, the oratorio The Dream of Gerontinus and the Cello Concerto.

Joseph Haydn

(Franz) Joseph Haydn was a prolific Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the piano trio and his contributions to musical form have earned him the epithets 'Father of the Symphony' and 'Father of the String Quartet'.   Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterházy family at their remote estate. Until the later part of his life, this isolated him from other composers and trends in music so that he was, as he put it, 'forced to become original'.
