The music of Five Up High has its roots in older styles jazz, but it is very much influenced by contemporary music. As David Liebmann states:” More than recycling the past, this is something strong in the moment - improvising”.
“The Deep” is a further development of the hard-bop style of their first CD and displays more free influences.
The repertoire is unusual, there is a hard-bop version of “Tulpen of Amsterdam”, an ode to the French classical composer Olivier Messiaen, a relaxed, danceable groove on the title song “The Deep”. Also there is “Captain Kirk to Enterprise”, a lyrical song for soprano sax “Now I know” and many more. This is a not to be missed CD by “the new generation of Jazz”.
