About the album

Strangely enough, original handwritten copies (autograph manuscripts) of Bach’s compositions for his most noble instrument are extremely rare; the majority of his organ works have been preserved in later copies, whereby it is uncertain who the author is. This is the reason why an extraordinarily large number of organ works have survived under Bach’s name, which remains a challenge for researchers to this day. This album presents three large and undoubtedly genuine compositions. In addition, it presents some of Bach’s doubtful and spurious works, which were already attributed to him in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
By using an original organ (Mueller, 1734, in the Waalse Kerk, Amsterdam) and a performance asesthetic based on historically informed choices of registration, touch, articulation and ornamentation - all magical details of Bach's music shine through.

Pietro Paganini (organ)

Pietro Paganini is a musician specialised in the repertoire of the baroque period, with a focus on the works of J.S. Bach and contemporaries. In addition to the organ, he plays harpsichord and piano, performing on salient historical instruments across different European countries. In demand as both a soloist and a continuo player, he has performed in important venues such as Carnegie Hall New York, Philarmonie Paris,  and Muziekgebouw Amsterdam. He has been featured in diverse international festivals, both specialized in early music, such as Oude Muziek Utrecht, Itinéraire Baroque en Perigord, Musikfest Bremen, and of broader reach such as Amsterdam Dance Event. He played with orchestras and ensembles such as Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Brüggen Consort, Orkest van Vlaanderen and Orchestra del Teatro Olimpico. Next to his activities as performer, he is active as artistic advisor for chamber music ensembles and has collaborated with Leiden University and University of North Texas for productions. Research on original sources is an important aspect driving his performance decisions. Pietro is a laureate and finalist of several international competitions, such as the Competition for Baroque Soloists in Brunnenthal (Schärding, Austria) and the Pesaro Competition, and a recipient of the Huygens excellence scholarship. Fascinated by the research on original sounds and historical organ building, particularly of the Arp-Schnitger school, he is constantly looking to use historical instruments in chamber music formations together with other artists, and to work together with composers and producers. After his education in Italy, he earned a Master’s at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, and pursued advanced studies at the State University for Music and Performing Arts - HMDK Stuttgart. He studied organ with T. Koopman, V. Bernhardt, and L. Ghielmi, and attended several international masterclasses. Since 2022 he is organist of the Meijer instrument (1795) of the Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder kerk in Amsterdam.

Composer(s)

Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He enriched established German styles through his skill in counterpoint, harmonic and motivic organisation, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms, and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France. Bach's compositions include the Brandenburg Concertos, the Goldberg Variations, the Mass in B minor, two Passions, and hundreds of cantatas. His music is revered for its technical command, artistic beauty, and intellectual depth.  Bach's abilities as an organist were highly respected during his lifetime, although he was not widely recognised as a great composer until a revival of interest in and performances of his music in the first half of the 19th century. He is now generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time.
