About the album

For his solo recording debut, Ivan Moshchuk explores the bond between Medtner and Rachmaninoff. Their distinct piano cycles—Forgotten Melodies and Études-Tableaux—were conceived on the threshold of a violent epoch. Grounded in noble sensibilities, the sets reveal a portal to the idea of the Vergessene Weisen: the ideals of a veiled world. Here, the music becomes a lens for memory as a path that endures despite the relentless march of time.

As a recording artist, Ivan has produced an album dedicated to Beethoven and Rachmaninoff piano sonatas as well as an album featuring world premiere recordings of American-Italian composer David DiChiera, published on the Innova label. Ivan's live performances have been featured on WFMT, American Public Media's Performance Today, and ClassicFM. In addition, he has recently directed and produced two experimental concert films, Vision Fugitive and Winter Afternoon, as part of an ongoing exploration in filming music.

Composer(s)

Nikolai Medtner

The Russian composer and pianist Nikolai Medtner was a younger contemporary of Scriabin and Rachmaninov, who wrote a substantial amount of works, all including the piano, amongst others piano and violin sonatas, piano concertos, songs and a few shorter pieces for piano. 38 of these pieces are collected under the name Skazki (Fairy Tales) and contain Medtners most appealing and original music. Despite his declining health, Medtner succeeded in recording several of his works before his death in 1951. His compositions became neglected in the following 25 years. Nowadays he is more and more often recognized as one of the most significant Russian piano composers, and several recordings of his piano works and a few of his songs are available.
