About the album

A musical journey to foreign worlds: rediscovered music by Sebastian George, a German composer who rose to become a style-defining figure in Moscow and St. Petersburg at the end of the 18th century. Sebastian George – A lifelong journey In the second half of the 18th century musical life in Moscow was flourishing. Attracted by high wages foreign musicians undertook long and complex journeys to Russia aiming to assimilate, perhaps even to settle there permanently.

These musical travellers found that working in a foreign country presented copious new perspectives giving them inspiring outlets for composition.
Originally from Mainz, Sebastian George was one such kapellmeister / composer who first travelled to Moscow in about 1766. In the early 1770s, as kapellmeister he started to form connections with Moscow University and the courts of the Sheremetevs and Razumovskys and, on settling in Russia, soon established himself as an entrepreneur, running a music shop in St. Petersburg from 1776–79 that sold scores, various musical instruments and, perhaps less predictably... wine!
Jahrhunderts
zur stilbildenden Größe avancierte.
Sebastian George – Eine lebenslange Reise
Mainz geborene Sebastian George.
Jahrhundert völlig in Vergessenheit; in

In recent years our musicians have been working intensively on a forgotten jewel in music history; the music of German composers in Russia. The first CD of this series Les Barbares Galantes was widely acclaimed by the public, on radio and by the international press.
Since its foundation (2018), the ensemble has been warmly received at renowned festivals such as Telemann Festspiele (Magdeburg), Earlmusic Festival Tallinn feat Reval (Estonia), Zamus Early Music Festival (Cologne), Rotterdam Festival (The Netherlands), and also for various concert series’ in Oberschützen (Austria), Leer and Hamburg. Additionally, Altera Pars organized a five-part concert series in the renowned hall of Oldenburg Palace where we presented some innovative programs of re-discovered early music not heard in our time. The ensemble has based itself in Cologne since 2020.
